9mm J frame
« on: May 09, 2006, 12:56:06 PM »
Some years ago I had a 9mm S&W Centennial that used full moon clips.  Is 940 the right designation for that? I liked the pistol, but I traded it off because at the time CCW was not legal in my state. CCW is now legal and I wish I still had that gun. I really liked the full moon clip for fast reloads and the 9 has slightly more power than the 38. Anyone hear anything about Smith bring that gun back, but as an airlite or airweight?

Shilo - I think they were a special run that sort of petered out.  The 9mm did not turn out to be a better performer than the 38 Spl from a 2" snubbie and after a fashion they were dropped from production.  You can probably still find them around but the question would be why limit yourself to 9mms in a 2" snubbie.  Speedloaders will work as fast as full moon clips and you can throw a heavier load with the 38 than with the 9mm.  JMHO.  Mikey.

Perhaps a more desirable gun might be the old Smith 547, made mostly for the European market, but still seen from time to time here.  It has the heavier 3" barrel, and balances beautifully for me, very similar to my fawned-over M-65 3".  It also held six rounds, not five.

Just something to keep an eye out for.

I have shot 454s, 45-70s and shoot 300 grain hot 44s alot...and hands down...the 9mm j frame was the most painful, unpleasent gun I have shot...we shot corbons through it, and the felt recoil and muzzle blast was extreem compared to the simular sized Glock 26...
