.223 accuracy
« on: July 23, 2006, 04:47:25 AM »
Maybe I worded it wrong the first time!  The situation that I am dealing with is, when I shoot my gun cold it groups at like 3 in..  The warmer that it gets the better it starts to shoot.  I remember at one time someone was talking about preload on the barrel.  Was woundering if anyone knows this guy or has any info that would be helpful in this situation.  When the barrel gets hot it shoots .5 to .75 groups (sometimes smaller) .  I just dont like having to shoot that many pounds before it starts shooting good.  Any input would be appericated.

sounds like you need a bedding or free float job.  not sure of which..

mine(24" heavy) shoots a hair over 1/2" all day long.   its free foated to barrel lug.

Mine was shooting inch groups right out of the box. I was using the White Box 45 grain jhp. You may want to try to float your barrel up to the forend lug using the washer. See the sticky on accurizing your rifle.

The forearm is floated and i have the O-ring on the front lug.  the only thing that I am woundering about is the forearm supposed to push on the lug or be free from thouching.  Mine does not touch the lug.  I also use bipods on the front swivel stud but it is the same way if it is rested under the frame.  Would be a great shoooting gun if I could figure this problem out.

I had NEF put a 308 barrel on my rifle and I am having the same problem.  I also floated the forearm and tried the O-ring trick.  I called NEF and asked them if they had any ideals on what might be causing the problem and was told they had no ideal and if  I wanted them to look at it to send in my rifle.

This is an offer I wouldn't pass up.

I have used the o-ring method on several of my rifles...but for the most consistant shot-to-shot accuracy I have gotten to date is from using the RTV Bedding method I outlined in the FAQ's...unfortunatly until Matt gets the links & the search feature enabled here it won't be easy to get at to read...I'll try to locate it later and post it for you...It does help...even using a sling..

I found this post on the RTV bedding, but I couldn't find the original.
