38-55 barrel on order!
« on: July 14, 2006, 10:46:07 AM »
After years of wanting a 38-55 I sent my reciever of to H & R last monday. I have been reading up on issues others have had with theres exc. I remenber reading here about a chamber cast someone did, but can't seem to locate it now. Can anyone point me in the right direction?.
Well I have started to gather components to reload and ran into a brick wall when it came to brass. All the net shops seem to be out of stock. However the reloading Gods were kind to me and found two bags of 50 at a near by gun shop. It appears they had been in stock for years and I was offered a deal to take both bags. Yes I did. The bags were never opened and the brass in as new.
Now while wating I can clean, deburr flash hole, resize exc.
This barrel will be shooting nothing but cast. I enjoy both smokeless & black powder.
Wish me luck!
if its worth doing, finish it!

Here's the article on chamber casting. It's for a military bolt rifle, but the basics are the same and easier on a Handi!!

Let us know how long it takes and most importantly, if your new barrel has an ejector or extractor.

Hi Charlie,
I bought an H&R Target Model (38-55) last winter, took over three months to get it due to out of stock conditions.  At any rate I had plenty of time to get my loads ready.  Here are a few things I've learned, your barrel may be a bit different than mine, but:

1.  The chamber on my rifle was very tight, such that I had to not crimp the bullets in the cases, or at least very lightly crimp them.  Suggest you wait to load the bullets so you can load the first one and see if it chambers.  That's better than having 50-100 rounds loaded only to find out they won't chamber.

2.  I slugged my bore with some lead fishing weights to find out the size of the bore and grooves, after doing this I ordered the sizing die.... .378 in.  Your bore size certainly could be a bit different, but the minimal effort to slug the bore is worthwhile.

3.  Since the chamber is so tight on my rifle, the extractor was not strong enough to pull the case out of the chamber.  This issue seems to be lessening the more I shoot the rifle and I anticipate that it will cease after a few hundred rounds.  I considered polishing the chamber but chose to let it "wear" in.  I keep a 3/8"X3' dowel rod in my rifle case to knock any cases out that stick.  If you are going to use your rifle to hunt with, the chamber polishing would be a better way to go.

4.  The first few groups I shot were nice but not very impressive (iron sights and new bore), but after I mounted a 3X9 scope and fired more ammunition they really started to tighten up.  Latest groups were .88 inches at 50 yards and 1.5 inches at 100 yards.   Last night I  polished the bore with 'Flitz' last night and will be trying it tomorrow if it isn't raining.

There are a lot of good folks at this web sight that are willing to share there experience.  I think you will like this rifle and cartridge.

If the 38-55 doesn't keep ya happy, you can always rechamber/rebore the Target to 405 Winchester as I did!!! ;D

Here's the bore slugging tutorial in case ya need it, #9 egg sinkers will do the trick! ;)

Charlie ... don't even waste your time pouring CerroSafe down the chamber to obtain it's dimensions ... it is undersized respective to the bore diameter!

Here's a good article on the subject ... http://www.brimstonepistoleros.com/gazette/jan06.html and what you can do to correct it.  Bottom line - have the chamber reamed out to 381.  Then you'll be able to shoot the proper bullets for the bore diameter

If you decide to have it reamed, here is a gunsmith with 40+ years of experience, is a single shot rifle lover and does great work.

Richard did my barrel and I gained more than 1.5" better groups at 200 yards... Black Powder, of course  ;D
Here's some pictures ... http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/smf/index.php/topic,93983.0.html

I'm using the Lyman 379674 mold that has been 'beagled' to drop 1:16 bullets at 381-382 and then run through a 382 custom Lyman H&I die

:) Thanks for all the info gents! I won't be loading till I have the rifle in hand, just doing prep work exc. Ditto as to land and groove diameters. They all seem to need a lettle tinkering.
After I get it in hand I'll post my dims.

Hey Tim, You're full of surprises.  How did you get a 405 stuffed into a 38-55? ;D

No, really...you have my interest totally peaked.  That sounds like a lot safer deal than all the stubbing stuff I've been messin' with for the past few days.

I was going to send the frame to the barrel I had planned stubbing out to NEF to have the 38-55 barrel fitted.  Maybe I can save a bunch of money and time by doing the 405 Target conversion.

Please...tell me the how's and who's to accomplish this transformation.  I wish the search was active so I could find out how you did it if you posted it.

Thanks  NFG

Thanks, Tim.  I've talked to Wayne about a Marlin 336 project that is still in the thought process.

Enjoy  NFG

Charlie, if you have trouble finding a jacketed slug for this barrel. Barnes makes a .377 255 gn that sometimes improves accuracy. They're expensive......$27.55 a box.

Thanks for the info smokinjoe, but I well only be using lead in this rifle. Its a roll your own thing. Its been 3 weeks this coming Monday that NEF recieved my parts so from what I've read here it well still be awhile before I recieve it back. I have a new supply of Goex 3f & t7 2f to try as well as h4198 & 2400. My brass is cleaned, tumbled and sized. I expect to have an interesting time finding what she likes to eat.
