Which of the these and why???
« on: September 27, 2006, 08:16:16 AM »
I coming real close to getting another rifle.  It would be mainly for black bears and deer in the brush.  I'm trying to make my mind up between the BLR's in .30-06, .308 & .358 winchester.  I don't reload and understand the .358w will be scarce, would probably get ammo through cpcartridge.com, and not cheap.  This gun isn't going to be a volume shooter for me though.  I want something that will cover a wide range and do so efficiently and convincingly.  Also posted in Leverguns and any input or information ya'll have will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

I have a BLR in 30-06 and compared it one day with a guy who had it in .308 on the gun range. Mine looked like Fort Knox compared to his. It just had a whole lot more metal in the receiver area.

To be honest it is one of my least favorite guns. I can't get it wet (well..I don't want to) due to much tougher tear down compared to a bolt action. And I don't like the trigger detaching with the lever as you cycle it. It's always gone boom, you just make sure the lever is held tight against the stock when you squeeze.

I don't know why it soured me. I think because the tear down of taking wood off medal, just too much involved and I bought the thing as a rainy day gun to use the iron sights with.

I've taken a couple of bear with it. It did fine with an Aimpoint scope and a Leupold 1x4 shotgun scope ot it. I'm going to put a Williams peep sight on it and if that don't do it for me well it just goes to the back of the safe again.

The 30-06 vs .308 is a toss up but if it were me I'd stay away from the .358w, but your talking to a guy that sticks with 2 caliber primarily (.223 & 30-06) strictly for the numerous bullet selection available.
