Rifle Rebore. .243 to .257,
« on: March 08, 2009, 06:13:25 PM »
I have a Rem 700, in .243 win.  Now I have no issues with .243's I just always wanted a .25-08, so my question is, can a .243 be rebored to .257?

Thats only a differance of .014 so that leaves only .006 for land height, and thats only assuming the new lands start exactly where the old grooves end which is very unlikely.  seems like not quite enough.  maybe a .260 Remington would be more practical.  and I kinda like having calibers that are the more uncommon.  I have a .222 instead of a .223 a .257 Roberts instead of a .25-06, .41 mag instead of a .44 that sort of thing.

And finally, any idea of who might be doing this sort of work in the western US? preferably the northwest.

You are probably going to need a new barrel.  All the companies that I know of that rebore need to remove all the previous rifling before cutting the new rifling.  Also the shoulder diameter of the 243 Winchester is 0.454" and the shoulder diameter of the 257 Roberts is 0.429", 0.025" smaller.  Even if it was possible to rebore it. the existing chamber would most not be removed completely without setting the barrel forward quite a bit.
