Cast and PP bullets for my 9.3x57mm
« on: July 02, 2006, 11:24:15 PM »
Hi Veral,

Without going into the why, I need to start casting for this rifle and have considered Paper Patching as I want to get the velocity to somewhere around 2000-2400fps or about equal to normal jacket velocities in the 9.3mm.

Now measuring the bore as best I can using a digital vernier caliper the bore size is 0.356" and the groove size is 0.370-371". I have not been able to slug the bore properly    now the nominal groove size for the 9.3mm is of course 0.366" but Husqvarna like Steyr use deep grooves. Checking cases fired in this rifle the inside neck dimensions in 0.373" and some one has already suggested that I use cast bullets of 0.373". What are your thoughts on this please?

To get these bullets I have considered getting a suitable 0.375" mould and sizing them down to 0.373" and using a gas check.

Now for PP bullets I have tried this using  Lyman 35897 & 35875 moulds. What would be the correct size to use with bore domensions that I have?

Thankyou in advance for any help or advice you can give  :-) .

If you must save money on the mold, a 375 mold could be sized down and may give acceptible results.  If you go that route, anneal the gas checks and install on the bullets before sizing.

However, measuring the inside of the fired cartridge neck is not a good measure to fit cast bullets to, as chambering will probably be a problem, with bullets hanging up in the throat. Understand that when the powder applies it's peak thrust the bullet will be upset tightly into the ctg neck, even if it is sized to a much smaller groove or throat diameter diameter, and this upset can hurt accuracy considerably, especially if the bullet bases are out of square during sizing.  So again, if you opt to size 375 bullets down till they fit, be sure to bump the bullet bases square at the bottom of the sizer stroke.

For sure results the first time, make a throat slug per my catalog instructions and send me an order.  I'll make a custom mold that WILL fit your rifle, and WILL shoot accurately on the first go around.  With all molds like this I hand write specific reccomendations regarding sizing etc which takes most of the wasted experimenting expense and money out of it for you.  My molds are expensive, but in the long run you'll probably save, and most important you'll be a happy caster, not a permanently soured one!

I don't believe many are having trouble emailing me, other than normal internet computor hassles.  The correct address is    LBTisAccuracy@Imbris.net            The caps are to make the address cool, it is not case sensitive.

My catalog doesn't give detailed instructions on making throat slugs.  Those instructions are sent when you order throat slugs from us.  They are a bit too detailed to give in your answer, in light of the fact that not many readers would find them under your questions title.

Hi Veral,

Well 4 times now I have tried the e-mail and each time I get this:-

The following message to <LBTisAccuracy@imbris.net> was undeliverable.
The reason for the problem:
5.1.0 - Unknown address error 550-'5.7.1 Mail from 212.74.114.37 rejected, SBL_C212.74.114.37'

I can e-mail others without problems but for some reason it will not accept this.

I notice that most of my incoming mail shows no caps, so try sending it with lower case only.

I'm sorry, and don't have an answer about the email problem, as I am almost completely computor ignorant.  I did have an outdated Norton anti-virus during your problem time, and just had a computor whiz install the most modern version yesterday.  Maybe that's a cure all?  I couldn't even install the new program!

Well I tried twice more and for some reason I cannot get a mail through to you. So it's down to snail mail.
