A nieghbor has a rat problem in his chicken yard. Lots of holes and crevases for them to live in. I stopped by to talk and saw the rats, offered to shoot a few he said sure he had been trying to find a good way to get rid of them. He is not a gun type person at lest he wasn't before today. Went back with the pellet gun, waited for a few minutes had to pass a few times as chickens were in the way. We baited them to the other end of the yard and I got the first one that came out cleanly  in the head. Had to get it out as the chickens were drawn to the dieing rat and were once again in the way.  We disscussed shooting safty and what was an ok shoot and why i was passing shoots. He was impressed on how effective this could be with very few bad impacts when you apply a little common sence. He is on his way to the store to get himself a pellet gun, no poisen around his chickens and the traps just wont trick any more. so I feel good about the non productive time as I got to shoot a rat, and I converted a non shooter. All in all a fine way to wast a few minutes.  i think I will stop by and help him out a few more times. ;)           Good shooting to all.    D.C.

I think that where it's feasible and safe, a pellet gun is the best pest control device there is, as it's species specific, right down the the individual varmint.

This post Brought back some memories.
A friend of mine used to have corn fields in west central Ga.
At the end of the growing season he would plow the stalks
into the ground with a cutter blade and field rats would run everywhere.
We would walk behind the tractor with our 410's and have a blast.

Another method is to bait a #10 bait fishing hook with bacon and cast it into the yard. A rat will hit it, and then you can have the fun of reeling it in.

The rod and reel would not go over well with the nieghbor. I however almost fell out of my chair. :D. This would get them clear of the chickens though.

Seen a fella' catch a Duck that way once on a pond.
That was one of the most comical things I have ever seen while fishing.

   Thats why I almost fell out of my chair. I thougt I was the only one that would do such things. But the nieghbor is just one step away from a tree hugger so I wont be sharing that trick with him. I was the guy with the duck once. It is funny, but the park ranger didnt think so. You can't reel one of them  in and keep it a secret, they make a racket. Have you ever tryed to pull a hook out of a pissed off Mascovy with a park ranger breathing down your neck? You try to say your sorry while you are trying darn hard not to get bit by a flapping big duck, and trying not to laugh. This happened when I was about 14 in a family picnic type park. I had forgotten about it untill I read that post. Not making fun of it, or you at all, just had a moment of total recall, is all.  It would probaly be a hole lot of fun,what by the way is a good rat rod anyway? OH yeh this is airguns not fishing so I will stop now.   Good shooting to all  D.C.

An 'UGLY STIK" should fit the bill pretty well !
Your Run in with the duck sounds mighty familiar.
Did that happen In Georgia By any Chance?
Did you snag a fella's shirt a few casts later?

No ,I am happy to say that I was not involed in any more trouble on that day. The above event happened in CA about 32 years ago. So i am inocent of shirt snaging.    D.C.

The original rat story came to me from a news story several years ago. Police were investigating a report of somebody behaving oddly and it turned out to be a guy in his 70's "fishing" for rats near a highway underpass. He'd bring them in and clobber them over the head.

why not go at night when the chickens are roosting. a light under the rifle will work so you could see them if you have a scope. you could bait  them out and shoot with no problem. i would try mackeral. it smells strong.   it helps if you can get above the rats as well. no worries about bullets bouncing around.

 i used to shoot rats from a corn crib this way with a .22 loaded with cci snake shot or cb caps. from what i remember, their eyes glow red in the dark.
