I can't believe that this gun actually shoots good.
« on: August 04, 2006, 12:45:16 PM »
I have had my .223 bull barrel gun for some time now and it would only shoot 2-3 inch groups no matter what I put through it.  I hand load and I can ussually find some sort of load that will at least get me around an inch, but this thing was so frusrating that I was almost ready to through the barrel away.  Then I found this forum and I read how you guys were using o-rings and such to float the barrels so I thought I would try my three different forends to see if there was any difference.  I didn't really see any so I tried shooting without the forend, resting the front on the forend stud and wow, right away I got a 1" group with some american eagle ammo.

So I tried some different handloads and was able to get a few .75 4 shoot groups and .625" 4 shoot group.  ( I only had enough bullets to make 4 shoot groups).  Suprisingly a powder that I tried for the first time, aa2230 showed the best results over varget and blc-2.

I am so happy to find out that this thing will actually shoot good.  I just need to do the silicon full float trick and see if I can get the same results.  Thanks alot guys for all of the good info.

AA-2230 was developed for the 223.  It and it's surplus clones are my favorite powders for me in the 223.

With the right powder and bullet combo , you should be able to shoot raggid cloverleafs all day long with the 223 . mine sure does .

Mine will not shoot the 40 and 45 grain bullets worth a hoot but feed it a 52 or 55 grain and it is a tack driver , so just keep working and it will come around .

good luck

Hi Netcott,

Glad to see things come around for you. My .223 ultra is a sweetheart, she shoots great and I would never part with her.

Glad you got it tuned up. I have learned many lessons in the past year ground hunting. At the gun club 100 yard range, bipod or varmet rest = .75 groups with WWB .45 gr hollow points. I'm happy. Resting off the truck hood, tail gate or bed miss! The gun has always shot good it's me. I have learned to steady or lock down the ultra in all shots. It takes a lot more effort in the field to hit the target. Ground hog hunting has made me a better shooter. When walking the fields: heart rate is up, no steady bench, can't always lay down and use bi pod (beans too high) and steady sticks arn't that steady. Still learning, what a great little rifle I hope I get as good as the rifle is.
