Bears out!
« on: April 04, 2003, 08:27:33 AM »
As I drove into Valdez this morning I notice two sets of tracks in the snow along the river.  One was diffently black bear.  The other was going in a different direction and was hard to tell what made them except they were bigger.

I will check the second set on the way home tonight.

Gents,
Just one man's story and un-verified by yours truly but...

A couple of days ago, I stopped to talk to a fellow who was installing cable service in a remote subdivision here on the Kenai and asked if he had seen any bears yet. He stopped and hesitated for a second...looked down...then back at me...then looked me in the eye and said, "Not today, and not on this job, but yesterday I saw a blackie in a tree by my house. I thought what the he!! is that, and then it jumped down and ran off! It scared the $$$$ out of me!"

I found out that he lives just beyond Sterling. I will verify if possible. I could just be a sucker though. It was on the 1st now that I think about it....
best,
bhtr

Dave,

BTW, how much snow do you guys currently have in Valdez and what's the weather been like for say, the past week?

Valdez weather!
« Reply #5 on: April 04, 2003, 05:07:17 PM »
It has been sunny and bright all week.
The morning temp here today was around 10 degrees.
It warmed up to 40+ by the afternoon.
The southern facing slopes are getting really bare in many spots at the lower elevations.
Skunk cabbage is starting to pop through.
The north facing slopes are still snow covered and will be for some time. At least one month past the other slopes unless we get a heavy rain.
It was a little windy earlier in the week but the winds have seemed to calm down now.

Need anything else?

Dave,

Thanks! I was just wondering since I've never been done that way before. Came close, but never actually been to Valdez. I might have to make a weekend camping trip there sometime this summer.

Saw this young brown bear near Yakutat last week...

That does it, Brian.  I'm going hunting tomorrow.  Maybe one of them hungry boars is out and about.

Dave, that was funny!  :)

I can assure all concerned taxpayers, that those pictures were taken only as we were on our assigned mission.

Here's a picture of that 'treestand', taken from my boat last summer, as that crew was heading home, and flew by...

I have actually seen that treestand out and about PWS I think. Hopefully my boating skills will improve this year and I won't have to meet anyone on board!

Tried to skip church today and go bear hunting.  Oooops....  Skipped church and the truck's battery finally gave up the ghost.  If I squint and the sun's just right, I'd swear I see little angel fingerprints on the old battery -- they got me.  Spent the morning buying a new battery, putting it in, and disconnecting that confounded alarm system.

the guys in town and what we really need here is a good rain.  The dens are still dry, spring food seems to be slow in comming.

Hey, Dabigmoose! Is there a native dance for rain?  We need some over here.

The local paper reported the first 'bear-in-the-trash' sighting today.

It's time!  :)
