Would you buy a Colt 1911 today?

Questor - I am afraid that it is a person's opinion.  I agree with Mr. Layton.

My first pistol was a plastic wunder-nine.  Double action trigger and long.  A buddy let me shoot his 1911 and the nine went away.  It may be a relic, but I prefer the older designs.  Designed when everyone was a shooter.

Recently, a friend was talking about how great the Sig are.  He said great trigger pull and I asked him if he had ever had the privilege to shoot a 1911.  I didn't argue, just invited him to the range.  I was with him when he picked out his 1911.

His S&W gives 8" groups while his 1911 gives less than 4".  He is happy with his decision.  I think that is the bottom line - shoot what makes you smile the most.

By the way, I don't have any strong opinions about the quality of Colt. The opinions I have about Colt are:
1) They seem to be out of the civilian arms business. Their web site sure makes it look like they are. We seldom see any product information about Colt in the magazines.  It's hard to find any references at all of new Colt guns for sale.

2) They seem to be at a great disadvantage in the 1911 business given that the products they do imply that they sell are things like world war 1 replica guns and such. All the other top makers are making products that people want to buy, and are buying.  There's a great deal of vitality to the 1911 business today, and Colt simply isn't part of it except in a minor and shadowy way. I subscribe to 3 handgunning magazines and you'd think I'd be able to find an advertisement once in a while.  Companies that don't advertise go out of business.

Nope.  I have had three or four and while they were ok, my Para Ord will shoot circles around most Colts.  I have Bushmaster AR which in terms of fit and and finish makes most Colt AR's laughable.

Colt is not the same firm it was 20 years ago.  Between Kimber, Springfield, Para Ord, and Smith you can do better if a 1911 type of pistol is what you are looking for.

I am talking a plain old 1911.
Not an  "X-Treme" or an "XX-TREME" or a "SUPER XXX-TREME"
or a TACTICAL or a "HIGH SPEED LOW DRAG" (whatever the heck that means in a firearm). The more things are tampered with, the more things are normally screwed up! The 1911's issued in the first world war
were in my opinion the pinnacle of the 1911. I have really seen nothing that has made them BETTER, they have only made them "DIFFERENT".
I have to agree with another post I saw, The Chinese Norinco 1911
was an excellent weapon at a very reasonable price, No bells, no whistles,
just a reliable accurate handgun. A reliable accurate handgun at a reasonable price.... What a concept! It is a shame they are so hard to get now. It is a shame Colt and most other manufacturers have forgotten that concept.

Yes, matter of fact I just bought a stainless XSE that has the best fit and finish of any 1911 I've ever seen.   It's a shooter as well, out shoots my Series 70 Gold Cup.

Yes, I would with this caveat.  Not until I have shot about 500 rounds of range ammo without a glitch, and then about 100 rounds the defensive ammo that you intend carry.

I own several Kimbers and S&Ws both are great.

Had a Nork for 14 years, liked it alot. That said, any gun is worthy of consideration. I agree with the above gentlemen, slam a buttload of rounds throught it with a proven reliability test. If you can do that and hit with it, chalk it uo as good to go, no matter the logo.

I shoot a Kimber in the 1911 now. Like it, trust it.

I carry a Gunsight 1911 and still have my old Military converted by Bob Chow and chromed and another NRA Colt --have carried Colt 1911's since 52 and would buy one above all copies.
