22 Mag to 218 Bee???
« on: August 05, 2006, 03:27:57 AM »
I just bought a 22 Mag sportster barrel.  While it is being shipped I have began to ponder a rechamber to 218 Bee and fit it on an SB2 frame. Is there anything I am missing in considering this rechamber?  I have owned a couple of Bees over the years and really enjoyed them.  A Hornet is too long to rechamber to Bee.  From your experience, what would this rechamber and extractor modification cost?  I have also thought a little about 221 fireball....I like things a little different.

Rechambers cost $50-$100, the ejector work may add a bit more.

I beleive .22 mag is a .223 bore while the Bee is .224 so no it won't work.

Brokenrack,

22mag bore size is .219" with a .224" groove.

.218 Bee is the same...

You may be thinking of the old .223 bore Hornets.

I did a 17 HMR to 17 remington conversion and the ejector is dead easy, if it is a rimmed cartridge it is even easier.  Just a little grinding or even a careful hand filing and you are set. Sounds like fun to me.  The bore is right so go for it.  Larry

I could of course be wrong but as I recall 22 lr was .222, 22mag & wrf were .223 and with the exception of older hornets centerfires were .224

By the way the second chart you refered to list the hornet as a .222 groove and a .217 bore same as a LR.+

Of course always best to measure.

That bore spec is probably for the old Hornets that shot .223"  bullets like this one.

Hornet Info

Modern Hornets shoot .224" bullets rather well! ;D

The .22 Rem Jet used a .222 bullet..

And as you mentioned, slug the bore to find out, every mfr probably has different ideas on what they think bore size should be for best accuracy as evident by looking at Montana Rifleman specs, they show all rimfires as the same at .218"/.222" and all centerfires as .219"/.224". ???

Clark shows their 10/22 Mag barrels as .218"/.224"!!!

I got the barrel at a good price and as soon as I find and decide on a gunsmith it will be off to be rechambered. Thanks for the discussion guys....it is way too hot to shoot here so talking about it is all I can do right now.
