Got a new NEF .17M2 yesterday
« on: August 05, 2006, 10:41:51 PM »
Finally got that first .17 yesterday.  .17M2

Had to see how it worked so shot it into a tree in the backyard just to hear the bang.
Am well satisfied with it so far.

This one is a Sporster, plastic, blue/black etc.

Took it and the .410 apart and the .410 action centered a rimfire case with the firing pin. Barrel fits perfectly on each other.  Measured them up and do believe with some careful centering the rimfire can be drilled and a centerfire firing pin installed.  Location of the hole it the only difference I can see so far.
Nah, ain't gonna do that, am just thinking out loud about it.  I'll put the custom chambered .17HMR barrel on this .410 and it'll be just perfect once the ejector is filed to fit the case.

Tried mounting an inch scope on it tonight and the hammer hits the tube. So it's delayed til a set of 1/8" higher mounts are obtained for it.  We're headed to the mtns in the morning so I'm disappointed in not having a scope on it so it can go along.  Without sights, there's not much benefit in shooting it just to make noise at these price's for ammo.

Told the store owner to order another one just like it in HMR for next month.

What I'm wondering about that, can I order one with:  nickle action, with a plastic stock?

That .410 I got in June hasn't been fired and the paint has chipped several place's on the painted wood stock. Won't be long til it looks sorry.

Wish we'd been able to figure out what barrel to get so I could shoot the .45 colt in the .410 barrel.  Turned out the first literature showing two different .410 barrels we've been able to obtain came with the guns.  That's the first we've been able to learn there's two different .410 barrels and only one will shoot the .45 Colt ammo.  Of course I got the wrong one!

I sure don't understand why they don't just have limited choice's such as:

black, nickle actions,

rimfire, centerfire

wood:  black or laminated, 2-3 colors to choose from, or plastic

then a long list of barrels to pick and choose from.

Sure would make things much easier in getting them set up the way we want them. That wouldn't limit the choice's at all, but, it sure would take a lot of confusion out of the deal.  Just have check boxes for what features are desired.

Anyway, am happy with this one, and believe I've got it figured out what to order next time.  Right now I've got a brand new .410 barrel that's extra if anyone wants it let me know.

Am looking forward to popping some p/dogs with this 17.

I just recently purchased a 17 M2 sportster myself.  So far I am not satisfied with the accuracy.  It may be the scope but I am not sure.

Just purchased a new scope today and will try it out tomorrow and see how it shoots.  My barrel seems to be prone to rust easily and I seem to remember reading of others with this problem.

What scope did you put on yours??

I tried to put several 1" on, but, the rings I have are too low and the hammer hits the tube.

Been tied up this week, a buddy decided he'd had enough and checked out.  Hell of a mess for wife and family. I've been trying to be handy for them.

What size mounts does it take for this? Or should I just grind some off the hammer spur?

Haven't shot mine except the one time to hear the bang.

You get enough of it, let me know and maybe I'll buy the barrel from you. Should have my e/m listed, if not georgeld@hotmail.

You've got options, George!!

My 17M2 has a Simmons 4.5-14x40 ATV mounted in high Burris Signature Zees with no mods to the hammer. Highs are .420" tall, mediums are .270" tall. FWIW, my 17hmr has a 6-18x40 Swift mounted in medium Sig Zees, no hammer mods.

My problem was the scope.  I should have known, I suspected this scope of being a problem on another rifle.  The main problem I have with my 17 M2 now is the trigger.  It must be 20 lbs. if it's anything.  I am just not brave enough to do the trigger job.  I know I would mess something up.  My new 45/70 Buffalo Classic has the best trigger of my 3 NEF rifles.

Hmmm, both of these I have the trigger is nice n lite.

Haven't put the gauge to them yet, but, beleive they are
less than 3# pull, which is just about right for me.

I don't like a trigger less than two #'s.

MAYBE, after tomorrow I'll be loose enough to do something for myself.
Funeral yesterday, helped another one of the same family pull an engine
today, taking it to the builder for him in the morning. Far as I know so far,
I'll be done with others after that's done.

I much prefer Weaver mounts, so they can be swapped to other guns I've
got.  Will buy/trade for thicker bases and e done with it. I have a box full of
1" scope's.

Glad it was the scope, I've had four scope's fail me in the last two yrs. Some oldies,
two were new.  Til these, I've never had a scope fail before in 50yrs of hunting &
beating them around.

Take care, hope you enjoy that lil gun. Once the triggers under control. I'd
like to see some groups from it at 50-100yds.

Tim: Thanks for the link, very interesting. Believe I'll try Fred's idea before I take things apart and drop them with my fumble fingers.  Appreciate sharing all these pic's and info guys. That's the reason we're on this site, right?
