SUPPORT FROM HOME(GOOD WOMEN ARE HARD TO FIND)
« on: August 03, 2006, 09:32:21 AM »
As some of you know,I make Tom Olson's MoundMaster beaver lures. What you may not know, these lures are made in the basement of my home.I am working on my third batch ,for this week.
Just now, when I came up to take a break and get on here,my wife said--"I can smell this new batch all the way into the bedroom".I asked her if it smelled good."I don't know about that, but it smells the way you want it to" ,she said.
Another time,my daughter came home for the weekend. As she opened the door she took a deep breath and said"ahhh-- the smell of castors,I must be home.
Not long after this,my sister in law stopped by.As she came into the house, she asked my wife what the smell was---my wife took a breath and replied--"smells like money ,to me"
Lure making in the basement, labeling of bottles at the kitchen table, phone calls from customers --late Christmas Eve.These are but a few of the things ,the women in my life have had to endure.
And for Them I am thankful.
 Tom

:)I hear 'ya bog but don't push your luck with the "good" women too far by making coyote lure in the basement! ;) LOL!  I don't know anyone but Maria that would put up with what I do and I seldom do any of it in the house other than come inside occasionally smelling like a skunk.  ;D Ace

Amen to that boys! Tho my wife is a bit "prissy" at times when comes to the skunk smell in the garage...lol! I still love her. Between the blood, the skinnin', and the skunks we are some lucky son-of-a guns. I love the panic in her eyes when she invites company over during trapping season...lol!

Tom
I was just out side today dipping some traps and the wife didn't say much.  But I will also be boiling and waxing traps soon too, as I have since I started trapping. My wife always takes a big whiff and says fall is in the air when she smells the traps and wax cooking. Never get any compliant about that odor. I also thaw and scrap hides in the basement when it's to cold in the garage. When I ship skunk essance the final test before shipping? I bring it in the house set it on the kitchen table. If the wife notices it/sniffes it out, it gets repacked before going in the mail.
I think it smells like flowers but she dislikes the coon lure I use says it smells like urine???
Now if I could just get her to wash skunk hides and clean her own fish. Well I'd be sitting real good then. LOL

My wife's from Boston so hunting, fishing and trapping were about as foriegn as it gets to her. She now baits her own hook, cleans fish, and guts her own deer. She said she would rather have me in the woods or on the water than in a bar somewhere. I agree.

When I first met my wife, she used to go run sets with me daily, caught many animals herself, etc. but after we were married that stopped abruptly. Come to find out was one of those I'll do anything to show you I like you but don't expect a lifetime of this.
However, she has always been extremely understanding of how much it means to me, and fully supports what I do every fall/winter. We have an agreement that it doesn't make it into the house, period, but OK in the shed out back or in her family farm out buildings. I strip at the door when I get home, clean up, do my own laundry, and keep the exposure to the unpleasantness to a minimum for her, and we get along just fine. She very much allows me to spend time/money on my passion because she understands it is important to feed your soul. She has things that I am not of fan of either, but I go along and fully support what is important to her also. That keeps our relationship stronger, I believe, by supporting each other's interests fully. Not necessarily participating in them, just recognizing that the differences are what makes us unique individuals and by supporting each other in them maintains a close bond, friendship, and love for each other.
For someone who grew up on a farm, with animals, she has a peculiar paranoia about cleanliness and "germs" from animals. But I respect it and do my best to make what I love to as unabtrusive on her space and requests as much as possible. It has worked out great. Sure there have been some compromises, like I would love to convert some of my garage into fur finishing areas, but we agreed to move that to her family's farm barn corner, which is very close to where I do most of my trapping so it works out very well anyway.
She also gets a kick out me when we drive anywhere...I'm leaning to check out creeks, bridges, beaver dams, edges of fields, pasture areas, ponds, etc. and we can both ID roadkill from quite a distance, a skill she said I taught her that she would rather not boast about but cannot help doing it because she has learned by color, size, fur texture, etc. what each species is that way.
She also knows that when I don't come strolling in the house until very late at night, she knows exactly where I have been and what I have been doing. As she put it, no "other woman" in the world would come close to me smelling like that! If its not trapping odors, its fish or fishing bait odors in the offseason. Probably provides some comfort level to her, offensive as it may be to her.
Yes, a good woman is a good thing to hang on to...and work hard to keep her happy and love her very much...it is well worth the effort in having a good friend and long-lasting relationship.

Do not grind Badger glands in the basement! My wife tolerates batches of coyote lure put together in the basement but no skunk essence or grinding Badger glands down there.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!
