I have very limited experience with these scopes.  These scopes are designed and generally intended for long range hunting.  Optically, these scopes are about a 7 out of 10 (with the Elite 4200 and Nikon Monarch being being 9.0, Zeiss Conquest being 9.2 and Swarovski being 10).

Most of my hunting is well under 200 yards, so I really don't have a use for it.  Even so, just hold the cross-hairs up accordingly - Simple for shots up to 350 yards or so.

The concept is great & it is fast. It is the quality/ruggedness of the scope
itself that I am concerned about. I bought one about 15 years ago & 2 of my friends bought one as well. One of my friends still has his. 2 out of 3 scopes malfunctioned, I feel that 2 failures out of 3 scopes is a bad ratio with a scope of this price. For example, if you buy Leupolds of the same price range, normally you would buy a pile of them before one fails. I had intended to equip my battery with these, as the concept is good, but these issues stopped that plan. If we could be assured without a doubt that these
quality issues were resolved, I would take another look, but until then NO WAY!!!

I have been using one for five years, it got stollen last fall.  Loved it, I had it on a 30-06 NEF Handi Rifle.  Took some tweeking of my loads to make them match the scope, but once I got that done it worked great.  I had the 18" circle.  A Caribou's head is about 18 inches long, a wolf's body is about 18" deep.  Worked great.  Did not hesitate to shoot a Caribou or wolf out to 600 yards.  600 Yards was my limit for Caribou, but I made a lot of 700 yards ahots at wolves.  At 700 I missed more wolves than I hit, but could not have made the shots without that scope.  Yes I put a $700.00 scope on a $170.00 gun, but that combination worked great.

Sourdough, when did you buy your Shepherd? I would like to think the newer ones are more rugged.

Keep in mind that the rangefinder feature of this scope is not as valuable as it once was. What I mean by that is the scope came out before affordable rangefinders as it was when I bought a Shepherd. It is still a good feature & comes in handy if the rangefinder is not working, otherwise a
rangefinder reading is MUCH more accurate but using the scope can be a back-up, but so can a Mil-Dot or Bal. Plex. If you are going to be shooting at a distance, get a Range Finder.

As far as scopes for 500-600 dollars is concerned, there are many with a Bal. Plex or Mil Dot for hold overs. Use a range finder & learn where these Mil Dots or Bal. Plex lines fit into your traj. curve & you are in business. For target shooting way out there, using your come-ups (elev. clicks) are more precise but the holdovers work to a point.
Here are just a few in this price.
Leo. VXII 3X9 & 4X12 with L.R. Ret.
Burris Fullfield II & Sign. Sel. with Bal. Plex or Bal. dot
Nikon Mon. & Buckmasters, Mueller, Bushnell & others with Mil Dots.

I'm currently using a Night Force scope and a laser rangefinder.  I've not perfected my shooting with this system yet, but it takes a lot longer to use the rangefinder than it took me with the Shepard.  Yes at long ranges you usually have lots of time to set up, but not always.  Sometimes you will only have time for one quick shot.  That is where the Shepard shinned in my openion.
