Primers, Standard or Magnum?
« on: August 17, 2006, 01:00:53 PM »
Gents and Madams,

Lots of experienced users of Black Powder Cartridges at NRA Silhouette, Mid Range and Long Range out there.  What are the desired primers for your caliber of choice and why?

Rumors abound as to the use of large pistol primers, and the rearward movement that suppodedly causes damage to breech blocks.

Many early users of the Federral 215 primer have ceased using same for less hot ( brissance)  primers.

Winchester has changed the WW Large Rifle primer from a nickel plated cup to a copper/brass non-plated cup.  The more soft copper/brass primer cup itself is noticeable in comparison to the older nickel plated variety.

Black Powder loading experiences and end results vary greatly and reasons for primer changes are usually well thought out and substantiated by each individual.  Some folks try one primer and never ever change, consequently their individual results may or may not improve.

Appreciate any and all comments.

ShortStake,

Have used about 2200 FC 215's, 400 FC 210's and nearly 1000 WWLR Magnum primers in my 40-65. When I developed the loads for each primer they all would go MOA if I did my part.  When I changed only the primer and left all else the same, the 210's especially did not do well at all.  One loading is equally accurate with either 215's or WLRM's---that is  Saeco's 740 about 25 to 1, dip lubed with SPG and unsized, 54 grains of Goex Cart, a .030 fiber wad, in Starline cases that have never been sized.  The 740-s are a slip fit and I compress the powder just enough so the bullet is engaged by the rifling.  I wipe between shots when developing loads and shoot strings without the wiping after the load is developed---just to check out how well the lube works.  All other loads including those with several different lots of Goex 2F and other lots of Cartridge have needed a bit more or less powder to get to MOA grouping.  Guess I'll vote for ???   I think I'll see what I can do with the 210's and FC BR primers I have when I get some more powder. Maybe I'll vote then.  ;)
Never said I didn''t know how to use one.

So far, some  of my best goups have been shot w/ GOEX Fg & CCI-BR-2 Lrage Rifle primers. Rumor on the street is that the BR-2 primers arer really a pistol primer.

Shortstake,

I read it in an article in Handloader Mag.(I think) the author didn't elaborate on the tests, only that they were done by a Factory during testing for a new loading manual. Primers were not the subject of the article and it was mentioned only briefly. From the way it was stated it was reciently, not old news. I always thought the Fed. 215 was the hottest untill reading that article. If I can find it, I'll post what and when.
