Rattlesnakes Active Now
« on: August 06, 2006, 02:07:13 PM »
Just since last Friday, several people I know in Medina and Bandera counties have
run across rattlesnakes. The people in both of these areas tell me they seldom see any
rattlesnakes. I guess the snakes are getting desperate for stuff to eat with
the drought still going, so they are moving around more now.

I come across them fairly often out at the lease.  MAN...there are some monsters out there (out just east of San Angelo).  It seems like it's been to hot for them the last month or so.  With this cool front (only got up to 90 today) maybe they are able to stay out a little longer before it gets too hot.

Have you heard about the new vaccine for dogs now?  Apparently it works!  The vet said he has had 15 snake bite cases, 3 were multiple bites, and the dogs that had the shot were better off by far.  Looks like it will be worth it when bird season rolls around.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

If it has been really dry there, they may be out looking for water.  We didn't see any at our Bangs Tx lease last time there, but I bet whe we go back we will see them..

I have property off of Hwy 277 west of Abilene, much of this area has been burner during recent range fires.  With the mumber of fires you would think the snakes would be eliminated, but this is not true.  We drove out to look the area over last week and found a fairly large snake near my son's deer blind.  My problem with seeing one, afterwards all I can do is watch the ground.

hardertr, The vaccine works really well.  It has been around for several years now, but was not real popular with a lot of Vets until recently.  My old cow dog has been vacinated three times (annually), he is old and seldom leaves the yard now, but I like to keep him current for those times when he acts like a puppy and wants to go with me.  My Vet said the shot will increase the chance of surviving a bite by about 75%, so if you have a good dog it is worth the price.  Course I have owned a few old dogs that were bitten several times with no ill effects, but I also lost one to a snake bite.
