Marlin and Savage with plain wood stocks and blued bull barrels usually sell for $200.
They are very accurate with some decent glass and a little trigger work.

a plain jane 17 hmr will cost you from 200 to 250, depending on area of the country. I would zero a 22mag, if using 30 grn Aguilas or 33 grn rmmy's at 50 yds. Why so short? because you are not going to shoot squirrels past this distance. Also if you shoot at a larger animal, out to 100 yds., this will allow you to shoot " down the tube" of a 2 inch diameter pipe all the way out to about 125 yds.
lets put it this way; with a 100 yds zero, the bullet will rise 1.5 to 2 inches , above line of site , at 50 yds, and will be about 5 to 7 inches below line of site , at 150 yds. DEPENDING ON THE GRN WEIGHT YOU USE! lower grn weights, get the smaller rise and fall obviously.
As an aside, the 17 hmr will cut these trajectories approximately in half!

A certain someone (to remain nameless due to his dislike of people regurgitating his info) prefers to sight in his 17hmr's to hit dead on at 145 yards--or 1.5" high at 100 yards. This way, no matter what you aim at between zero and 165 yards, you will always hit within 1.5" of your point of aim--goot to hit most all small varmints.

FWIW, when sighted at 100yds, the 17HMR is only 0.1" high at 50yds (depending on scope height over bore)

You should be able to find the top of the line Marlin 917 VSF, Laminated stock, stainless and fluted barrel for around $280.  I should group near an inch consistantly, and under and inch most of the time with an occasional 1/2 group at 100 yards if you put good optics on top and do your part from the bench.
