Constant eye relief ?
« on: April 09, 2003, 02:09:04 PM »
:? I'm thinking of purchasing the Bushnell Trophy 2-6x32 pistol scope.
It has 18" constant eye relief.
This seems like a bad thing to me, as you must have the scope positioned at the 18" in. mark and leaves no room for adjustment.
what if your arms just Aint that magical lenght for this to be a comfortable
lenght to hold the firearm. Off the bench I see no problem, but in the field I see this as a potential problem. This is going on my .223 14" contender.

Please explain why most people seem to like this Idea of constant eye relief, as I have no experiance with pistol scopes and do not want my first purchase to be a bad one.  :(

Thanks in advance:

If it's not constant then it will change as the power setting is changed on the scope. High magnification will be different than Low. You won't be able to hold the gun the same from one end of the power range to the other.  KN

KN is right, and that is the one thing I do not like about variable scopes of the brands other than Bushnell.

Thing that concerns me about the Bushnell, is that from my experience, scopes with an eye relief in the range of 21-23" suits me best.  Based on that, the 18" seems short.  I keep looking at the Bushnell because I would like one more variable scope and they are priced the best, but that sure seems like a short eye relief.

I have a Elite 2x6x32 and I can tell you the constant eye relief is fine for me.    I have a rest that I use that attaches to the tree when I am in a tree stand.  I would like to hold the pistol a little closer to me when I shoot up there.  However, I have gotten used to it and killed 4 deer and a bobcat with it last year and two deer the year before.  With constant eye relief it won't matter what setting is on the scope, you will always hold at the same length.  That should increase your efficiency by having the same hold on the pistol every time.  I like mine, but sometimes it does feel like it is a little too far out.  To rectify that somewhat I mounted the scope a little further toward the muzzle of the barrel. This cuts my length down to about 14" from 18".

That's what I shoot on my .308 Win Encore with no trouble.  I'm a pretty average sized feller (height and length of appendages), and it fits me just fine.  The fixed eye relief coupled with the reasonable price make the Bushnell Trophy an excellent option.

You guys and all your positive opinions are going to end up costing me money for a Bushnell!

I've been a Burris fan for years and own only Burris handgun scopes.  A couple months ago, I ordered a 3200 2-6 from Jon @ the optic zone.  I didn't like the narrow field of view and the constant eye relef.  The more I use it, I like it better.  It seems to be a good scope with no problems.  I haven't used it enough yet, but I do like it.  Ever since Burris changed from the platic "hunter" knobs to the steel, the adjustments are very stiff, so I'll be trying another Bushnell next.

I own both the Burris 2-7x and the Bushnell Elite 2-6x.

The Burris is excellent but you must move the scope closer to your face as you increase the power.  The field of view is excellent which translates into I don't have any problem quickly finding my target.

The Bushnell Elite is also excellent, but very different.  It is a little smaller and lighter than the Burris.  The constant eye relief is both wonderful and horrible depending on what you are doing.  When I sit down or lie down to shoot the long eye relief limits the shooting positions I can use effectively.  The field of view is less than the Burris and quite limiting. This translates into I have a hard time finding my target with the Bushnell at 6x.

Having used both (and still using both), I prefer the Burris 2-7x.  However both are excellent.  I'm sure one can get used to either.

Not completely pleased with either for hunting, my solution was to buy lighter 4x scopes with good field of view and widely variable eye relief.  All my 10" barrels (for hunting) wear 4x scopes.  I have a Leupold, a Burris, and a Weaver.  All are quite adequate.  I find I can shoot out to 150 yards in any reasonable shooting position with these.  I save the 2-7x for my longer barrels for antelope and hunting colored dots.

The good news is you can't go wrong.
