150 gr load for 270 win
« on: August 30, 2006, 03:03:47 PM »
Hello folks,
I was luck enough to come by some 150 gr .277 spire point Hornady ball cheap. I never ran any loads for this weight  but I thought someone here may have. I'm not really looking to have rounds touch at 200 yrds, more like minute of deer. Any in put from how they are on game would be great as well.

Thanks,
jmm1245

Hodgdon H4831SC is excellent in 270 Winchester. 4831 is the classic powder for that cartridge. I use the SC because the grains are "short cut" and hence the SC. It meters better than the longer sticks of standard 4831. It's also one of Hodgdon's "extreme" powders, which means that it's less affected by temperature variations.  Hodgdon.com has load data.

I have to agree it is hard to beat H4831 and the Hornaday 150 Spire Point is very effective on deer.

I use 57-58 grains of H4831 in my rifle under the 150 grain Hornady with excellent accuracy. This is a grain under max in my rifle and I suggest you work up from 55 grains to be safe. I have used this bullet on game from Elk on down with perfect satisfaction.

I've used 45.0 gr of IMR 4064 with a standard primer and a 150 Nosler solid base with very good results. You could also try 48 - 50 gr of 4350, as my records indicate that load was also pretty accurate.

Be sure to check a manual and work up.

Hi,

I use 59gr RL-22.  Chronograph tells me 2970fps with 150gr BT's.  Shoots 3/4" at 100 in my 23" shilen barreled ruger.
