7mm bullet question
« on: April 10, 2003, 10:54:07 AM »
I have a box of .284 caliber 130 gn spitzer single shot pistol bullets.  Can these be shot out of a rifle?  They were originally for a Thompson Contender pistol  that a buddy of mine had.  He gave them to me .  I am just getting into reloading and wondered if I could use them in my 7mm rifle.

Those 130 grain spitzer bullets can be used in any 7mm rifle cartridge, not just single shot pistols.

That particular bullet weight by Hornady, Sierra, Speer, or whatever is a good all-around weight for deer, big varmiints, and general shooting.

you didn't mention what cartridge you're loading for.ssp bullets are thinner jacketed with generally softer lead cores designed to expand properly on deer size game at about 2400 to 2600 muzzle velocity from about 50 to 150 yds. they will fit any 7mm. drive them to fast and they will act like varmint bullets or even coming unglued in midair not even reaching your intended target. stay within their design limitations and they will work fine.
if you need to add politically to the word correct, it isn't!

I ordered some of those bullets to use in my 7-30 Waters in my Contender and I was sent the 6mm SSB's by mistake. I used them to fireform 6 ppc cases in my TCR rifle. They shot good, so I wasted them on groundhogs. Give them a try, but keep in mind what was posted about velocities and the purpose of the bullet. A 7 mag. might be too much and 7-08 could be just right.
Good Luck,
Stan

Thanks for the responses.  I shoot a 7mm, but one of my sons shoots a 7m08.  Looks like he will get the bullets.
