What type of open sights are used now?
« on: August 18, 2006, 09:19:56 AM »
I just got off the phone with a customer service representative asking them a question about open sights.  I have seen several Handi'swith open sights made by Williams recently (4570,30-30, and my 500 magnum) and I really liked them.  I am considering getting a 223 superlight barrel with open sights and I wanted to know what type of sights it had.  Their rep told me that they have gone back to using their "in house" sights.  I have a 45-70 that I purchased in 1993.  Its sights are fine, but not as good as the Williams I have seen, in particular the front blade on my 45-70 is too thick for my liking.  The sights look like something you would see on a revolver rather than a rifle.

Anyhow, I was wondering if someone has more information regarding this.  I am hoping that their "in house" sights are not like the one on my 45-70.  I could always purchase Williams sights, especially one of their good peep sights and then get a front to match, but it is always nice to get good sights directly from the factory.

I only have 3 barrels with iron sights, they're all the older style fat, flat sided blade, one of the front sights has a much smaller screw than the 6-48 that's used in the late production H&R sights. The rear sight in this pic is disassembled, so the elevator is in a much higher position than it would be in use. The front sights vary a little in design, but they all pretty much look the same in profile. If you haven't read it yet, check out the Peep and Firesight link in the FAQ, they are a much better option for the front sight, IMO.

Thanks quickdtoo, you are a help yet again.  I am always thinking of projects and most involve handis (mainly because they are affodable).  I recently purchased a 500 magnum that came with nice Williams firesights.  I am thinking that the superlight barrel would be a great addition and nice walkin' rifle.  Light and short.  After looking at your pictures , I think I would be changing the sights anyway.  I really like that rear sight on you rifle.

That rear sight looks like the sights T/C uses on there tradidional muzzleloaders. I have the williams sights on my 45/70 handi and i like them alot better.
