Owners of 941 stainless - need your feedback
« on: May 24, 2006, 04:10:04 AM »
I did a search of the Taurus section for anything I could find on the 941 and there wasn't much...

Any one has a 941 in stainless?

How do you like it?
How's the trigger pull, the finish...?
Any history of problems?
Service and parts availability

I'll take all the info you can send... ordered one for the wife and want to know what to expect.

Thanks

Hey, thanks for the reply DirtyHarry...

I pcked it up yesterday and this is what I've learned so far:

Cleanliness - It still had tiny metal shavings and particles from the machining process all over the cylinder assembly and ejector, it was tacky in spots where the oil had started to dry and runny wet where it hadn't, and smudges from handling with dirty hands were everywhere.

Function - The cylinder has a lot of rotational play in the at-rest position and only a small amount in the cocked position. Opening and closing the cylinder is a little stiff.  SA trigger pull is 7#15oz. and DA is over the 12# limit of my scale.

Finish - The satin finish is over-all pretty good.  There is a small ding on the cylinder, another where the hammer comes into the frame, and tiny machining marks at several other places.  The bore rifling shows tooling marks and so do the chambers.  The rubber grips are fine and feel good.  The adjustable sight is a little misaligned in its groove and the white outline is more like grayish (I'll clean it and see if it improves.  The front sight's insert looks glued in place and there are glue remnants around it.  The barrel crown is the only really unacceptable finish: it has chatter marks from machining and some gouging, as if the lathe's feed was too fast or the insert was dull.

Customer Service - I called Miami and was put on hold; I hung up after ten minutes of waiting and called back.  I waited on hold less than aminute the second time before some one picked up.  I was able to find the date of manufacture and the date of sale to a distributor.  I was also told that, although, there are other barrel lengths available for this model, the factory will not sell them and will only replace a barrel with the same length as original.  I was also told that they do not work on the trigger pull if it is within their specs of 11-13# for DA; they consider that "customization" and they do not "customize".  And here's the punch line... if my gunsmith works on the trigger pull, it is considered an "alteration" or otherwise unauthorized modification and THAT would VOID my warranty.

I took off the grips and used a can of Break-Free CLP and an old toothbrush and it cleaned up very well.  Then I blew it all out  with compressed air and used clean cloth to finish out.  It does look very good.

Later, I will consider my options about trigger pull.  The stiffness of the cylinder should improve with use, the cosmetic flaws I can live with, and if it shoots well. it will be a keeper.  But, please, spit on my face if I ever buy Taurus product again.

FWIW...

I will be testing different ammo in it, including some "Coyote Killer" by OSSI and I will report back.

Thanks again for replying when no one else did.

Bingo!  I have one!   941 Ultra-lite, Stock.  I don't mess with triggers or doo dads on any of my guns. Of course I never have problems with them either.

Right now this thing is loaded with snake shot and hollowpoints.  I shoot it single action 99% of the time.

It has a 2" bbl so it goes with me lots of places or is by the bedside.

I have lots of calibers, semi-s, revolvers. Even a 642 S&W.  I have just taken to this 941 as it fun, cheap and easy.  YMMV.

My Wife has a 4", 94 Stainless.  Same deal.  Great lil guns and loads of fun.

You are scaring me. I am in the market for a 22 Mag revolver and am considering the 941 in 5" with a blue barrel. I had a Taurus 945 and it was a great gun so I was thinking of getting another Taurus. Mine will just be a plinker or mess around gun to shoot turtles, frogs, or whatever. I think the Taurus would fit the bill OK. You really did a once over on that review of that gun you got. I was impressed. I will be looking forward to your report on the ammo. Thanks.

Now, before I get 10,000 replies questioning or disputing the above...

These are the results of my testing, with my gun, with my chronograph, with my hand, on a particular day, at a particular place.
If YOUR results were different and you used the same EVERYTHING I used, then let me know, otherwise, I do expect YOUR results to be different and I will not question them. OK?

Other info:
I had a local 'smith work on the trigger pull for me. After 1)changing the springs with a kit from a well-known vendor who did say it wouldn't work but we wouldn't listen, and 2)changing the springs to comparable S&W models, and 3)some minor polishing of the action, I am sad to report that, in DA shooting, a little over half the shots are misfires. The good news (?) is that he has ordered another set of springs he will tweak for me next week...

Soon I will update other info on another project I'm working on... an 18.5mm that shoots 500 gr. rounds at about 2000 FPS... and kicks like two mules on PCP (not ideal for squirrel hunting).

bye all

I've had my stainless model 94 3" barrel 22LR for over 12 years, it's been a accurate, reliable gun that I would recommend without hesitation.  Don't expect S&W fit & finish at a Taurus price, these guns are bang-for-the-buck guns, Chevies not Cadillacs.  I'd like to pick up a 941 with 5" barrel for hound & pig work.  Here's a couple articles you may enjoy:
