Which powder for 8x57 Ballistic Tips
« on: August 08, 2006, 06:42:52 PM »
I have been getting good groups with 200g Speer bullets and 175g Sierra bullets using H4895. I can not get good groups with the BTs using either H4895 nor Varget. I have crimped and not crimped, loaded short and loaded long. Any suggestions? Different powders?

So far my best powder for the 8mm has been IMR 4064.

I will second the IMR4064. I got almost the same size of group with the same bullet and powder, but I don't remember the powder weight. I have also got good results with Winchester 748, and found Varget only gave good loads on the slow side.

I am shooting a sporterized Turk Mauser with a 21" barrel. I have gotten good groups, but just not with the BT. It may be that it just doesn't like them, just as it does not like S&B factory ammo. I am a new reloader (only about 250 rounds)and just trying to figure out what next with these bullets. I will have to try 4064.

W-748 works well for me with the 175 grain Sierra bullet.
H-380 worked well for me with the 200 grain Speer bullet.

I have had great accuracy results with RL-15 and 200 grain Speer in my 98K.

175gr Sierra and 170gr Speer RN and IMR4064 powder...#1.   BOTH under 1" if I do my part.

I havent tried the Nosler BT's yet...I would def start with 4064 powder.
