25-06 for highpower silo
« on: April 15, 2007, 10:52:33 AM »
Anybody ever try one? Not much in the way of sleek long range bullets available for it other than Berger or JLK. I'm going to try it with lighter varmint bullets at 3000 fps or so, to see how well it works on the closer animals. There's almost no recoil, and if I can manage to hit at least 20 out of 30 I'll still win most of the time around here. I made the mistake of shooting a chicken with a full power load, I sure won't do that again. Nearly drilled a hole all the way through!

I've only been to six or seven big bore matches, but there was a .25-06 at one of them. Outshot me, which wasn't hard to do!!

They have a lot of muzzle blast for the people standing next to them and they do a lot of target damage.  Target damage is done by the heat from a high velocity bullet impact.  High velocity bullets bore a hole through the targets when they hit them.  If you slow down the bullets so you are spitting the C, P, T loads out at around 2800 and the R out at around 3000 you should be OK.

Don't shoot it real hot and you should have lots of fun with it.

Yep, that's the plan. I need to experiment with it some more to find a proper powder to do that. So far I've tried Varget, and it'll go down to 3000 with good accuracy but any lower and it's not burning right. (smells bad) I need to try some 4198 or Benchmark to see if I can load it light enough. Might try AA5744 as well, I have some of that. It's tricky to throttle back these big cases enough and still keep good accuracy. Pretty much I want it to duplicate 250 Savage ballistics.
