Finding the parts is not that difficult but finding the equipment to do it with is a pain in the rear. I have a beautiful SMLE that the bore is terrible on.
I want to replace the barrel on it but I am having difficulty finding
a smith with the proper vice and wrenches to do it.

If going through a smith you might be able to just find a .303 cal barrel blank and have them go from there.  It'll probably cost a pretty penny, but rebarreling a Mosin at all as going to cost more than just buying another one, so I'm guessing you're wanting to "spruce one up" a bit :).

SMLE barrels are strange looking critters, Not sure if just a blank will do it.
I don't want it a sporter, I want it to look the way God intended

if I find a barrel I am thinking I would go with a bore dia of .312

that would allow me to still shoot surplus but yet have a good barrel.

any other thoughts on this?

maybe .311?

what would you choose?

I think for the money you spend it would be a loosing proposition. If your barrel is bad look for a mosin that has a good barrel. They are out there. You very seldom see many sporter mosins because they are not really very adaptable to sporterize and that would include adding new barrels.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Have you shot the rifle yet?

My Moisin sporter has a nasty pitted and chewed up and rusty bore yet it still shoots great.

Yes I have shot it a bunch, no real groups unless you shoot 20 times at the same target, then is only has 20 holes in it...

Try Silver Bear or Brown Bear ammo, or Wolf Gold. My 2 M-Ns shoot shotgun patterns with surplus ammo, but shoot quite good with commercial ammo they like.
