Stiff load of H-322 with a 300gr Sierra works good for me. Beware, that 24" light barrel s going to stomp you pretty good.   KN

I had one and H322 and IMR4198 were my powders of choice. Lots of recoil but not as much as my 416 Rigby barrel for my Encore.  :D

I HAVE A 45-70 12 INCH BBL ON MY CONTENDER AND IT IS MORE PLEASANT TO SHOOT THAN AN ENCORE 454 15 INCH BBL I THINK THIS IS ONE OLD TIME CARTRIDGE WHO HAS A NICHE IN THE 21ST CENTURY.  MY 45-70 IS MAGNAPORTED ,CASLLL WASNT MAYBE THIS IS AN UNFARE COMPARISON  THANKS FOR LOOKING...JIM

I have first hand experience running Ruger #1 loads in my 24" 45-70. It was like someone emptied a big ole can of whoop ass on me when the hammer dropped. The recoil was very substantial.
