7.62x39 Ammo
« on: July 24, 2006, 08:20:25 AM »
I recently had jury duty, during a break in the trail I was talking to one of the other juries and learned he was an Wholesale Ammo Dealer.  I asked about the increase in the price of 7.62x39 ammo, and was told that we could expect it to go even higher.  He said it had gone up 100% in the last six months, and is expected to make another 100% increase shortly.  According to him,  the reason for the increase is Iran is buying all they can lay their hands on.  He said he had a contract with a Russian company to supply him 7.62x39, but someone from Iran had offered the company twice what he was payiong, and offered to pay in gold.  They cancelled their contrat with the US Company.  Based on what he said, Iran is buy all that can make worldwide.  He also said the increase in the price of copper has driven it up somewhat.

As he pointed out, this looks bad from two points of view.  Not only are we going to experience a shortage of the ammo, but it also looks like Iran may be gearing up for war.  You may want to hold on to your 7.62x39, shortly it may be worth as much as gold.

our local gun dealer told us the same thing.
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell the truth I shoot a Springfield XD so it doesnt really matter.

What amazes me is that it isn't being produced in great quantities domestically. You'd think with all the demand... Sure is fishy.

Anyway, reloading is looking better every day. I bought my brother some Lapua brass ($$$), and we've had luck scrounging up empties at the local shops.

EDIT: removed ramblings

I have been telling every one to STOCK UP
for over a year now! This stuff has been fact folks....
"STOCK UP"
You better do it on all calibers because some of the surplus
dealers are finding out that the metals from the components are
worth more than the loaded ammo.....
I was talking to a welder this morning and I am not even going to
relate how bad he said the metal prices were getting. Terrible is the word
that sums it up...

Well, went to my local store, he had some Wolf ammo in 223 and 7.62 Russian. He likewise said that it took forever to be delivered, and is 90% more expensive than it was in the beginning of the year!

I have searched many websites for it only to find that it was "Out Of Stock".
The local wal-mart has it, but it is quite expensive. If I read it right,
it was $18.00 a box for a 20 rd box of soft points.
This is going to get ugly folks...
And not just for this caliber...  I buy a 500 rd brick of .22 LR
every time I go to Wal-mart now. I shoot .22 a lot though but
I want to have a good supply.
I know I sound like a conspiracy theorist, But these shortages
I have been talking about are starting to really show up now!
It isn't a theory anymore.
