What is a "bossed" rear sight?
« on: January 29, 2006, 03:49:01 AM »
I don't know what a "bossed" rear sight is?  I've seen listings for Savage 99s that say the rear sight dovetail is "bossed."  I've never heard this term before and can't find it used in some of my gunsmithing books, what is it referring to?

Please help and many thanks.

It would be a sight that is mounted on a raised metal base that is part of the underlying barrel steel. the boss is the pad that is under the sight.

Clodbuster, that makes sense considering the barrels on those that are 'bossed.'  They in fact do have a thick 'ring' of steel that the dovetail is cut into so that it is not cut into the barrel per se.  The dovetail is cut above the barrel into this extra ring of steel.  Good info, thanks.

Look at the barrel of a standard grade pre-64 Winchester Model 70; the rear sight sits on a boss.
