What Power Glass On Your Pump?
« on: July 24, 2006, 03:33:07 PM »
I've noticed, and it should come as no real surprise, that I shoot tighter groups with higher magnification scopes.....Duh!!!

I've got Leupold QR mounts & rings on my Rem 700 Mtn LSS 7mm-08, and can easily change scopes.  When using my 3-9x40 "hunting" scope, I can fairly consistently shoot 1" - 1 1/4" groups with several different loads.  When I use my 6.5-20X40 the groups shrink down to the 1/2" - 3/4" range.  Obviously, when I do my part!

I've been considering a Rem 7600 and accordingly have been reading up on them on various forums.  I've noticed two things that seem to be fairly consistent regarding the 7600's.  1) For the most part, folks report group sizes in the 1 1/2" range.  (some smaller / some larger)  2)  In general, the pump shooters seem to prefer lower power scopes that allow them a wide field of view and thus the ability to find and get on target very quickly.

The reason for the poll is to see what average scope magnification is being used with the 7600 Pumps.  I suspect that in general, fairly low powered scopes are being used and this may to some degree explain the larger group sizes being reported.  Yes.....I know that Pumps aren't as accurate as bolts.......but that doesn't explain how some folks are getting MOA groups or better with their 7600's.

thanks

A good 3-9 power is hard to beat.  I do like the some of the 2-7x32 (or33) power scopes, though.  The variable gives you the best of both worlds.

Just keep it dialed down to the lowest setting in all situations where you don't need the added magnification for a precise shot, like in a stationary stand or blind.

My pump Remington 141 in 35 Remington has a 4X20mm scope in it, but it looks right.  The variables would look out of place, to me anyway.

2 X 7 Nikon on the .35 Remington 7600 Carbine. ( See thru scope mount.)
3 X 9 Nikon on the .35 Whelen 7600 Rifle. (Warne quick release scope mount.)
4 X 12 Leupold on the 25-06 Remington 7600 Rifle. (Warne quick release scope mount.)
3 X 9 Nikon on the 30-06 Springfield 7400 Rifle. (Warne quick release scope mount.)
No scope on the .280 Remington 7400 Carbine.

1" to 1 1/2" groups are all I get. I use Remington cor-lok bullets in standard hunting loads. If I hand loaded or if I was a better shot I would do better but all I shoot are deer so I am good.MIKE.

2.5 to 10 on my 35 Whelen 7600.

I sight in at 10, hunt at 2.5. The nice thing about the scope is that the POI doesn't change between magnifications. I've had cheaper scopes that did change.

I get around 1" groups, sometimes a bit bigger, sometimes a bit smaller. I also shoot Grand Slams - the Remington bullets were terrible in my gun. Federals were good but they stopped making them. With Federals, I could consistenty shoot below 1" groups. I've sent away to Superior Ammunition for a try with Woodleigh Weldcores and Swift A-Frames but I doubt I'll do much better than the Grand Slams and the Slams are a LOT cheaper.

I have a Leupold VariX-III 2.5-8X36 on my Rem. 760 (30-06) and like it.  I could be just as happy with a quality 2-7X or even a good straight 4X.

I've been using this .243 for long distance hunting since I was a teen.  It wears a Simmoins AETEC 2.8X - 10X rifle scope.  Very clear and bright.  I'd recommend this scope to anyone!

95 grain Ballisitic Tip reaches way out there for big game.  I'm amazed at the advances in bullet design and performance that have been completed in the last 8 years.

I use a 2 X 7X 33  Leupold on my Rem 7600, I want to be able to see up close also.  A wide field of view at 25 to 50yds is important when hunting.  If I need more than the 7X I just don't take the shot.  7x is big enough for the animals I hunt, deer, pigs etc. etc.  Most of the time most shots are under 100yds anyway.  Sometimes the quality of scope is more important than the magnification.

Have a VX-II Leupold 1-4 on my '06 carbine.  Has been great for still hunting.  Many times it's on 1 power. ;)

I have a 1.5 to 5 x Vari-X III Leupold on my 7600. I have a .280 that has been cut down to a carbine. I bought the scope with money I received when I graduated college back in 1991. At the time I also bought a Leupold Vari-X II shotgun scope in 1 to 4x for my 870. The shotgun scope came with a "heavier duplex reticle" which I liked so much I sent the scope for my rifle back to Leupold and asked them to change to that reticle in the Vari-X III for me. I had a conversation with someone at the company who was asking why I wanted to do that. I explained that my type of hunting (still hunting/tracking) for whitetails in the north east usually presented me with a quick shot option; my scope is always set at the lowest mag and to me the heavy duplex reticle allowed me to get on target quicker and in the off chance that I needed to take a long shot at high magnification I really didn't think the heavier reticle would cause any issues and over the years it hasn't. About a year later I saw that Leupold offered the same Vari-X III scope with a heavy reticle and touted it for use on "dangerous game rifles" and bragged about quick target aquisition. I have no idea if my conversation had any affect on the introduction of that scope model, but is seems more than coincidental...and if that is the case they should have sent me at least a small token of their appreciation! ::)
