What Combo configuration should I get next?
« on: July 18, 2006, 08:22:23 AM »
I currently have a 30-06/12 ga. that I use for everything.  I am looking to getting an additional lighter configuration for varmit, predator and all around lighter application use.  Range could be up to 200 yards.  What should I go with?

6.5 swede/12 ga.
.223/12ga.
.22/410
.22 mag/20

or something else?

Thanks
Doug

My vote is for the .223/12ga...  Ammo is cheap, and it will easily handle coyotes ect. at 200 yards.

Now, the real question is, are you going to buy a high quality firearm so it shoots well??   ;D

I was looking at he 6.5 swed but the .223 offers a great smaller caliber option.

The Baikals shoot great.  But yes I am buying a high quality firearm, Spartan.  :D ;D ;) :o
I have all the after market chokes.

Nothing wrong with the 6.5 swe...  Except for what you want to do, the .223 would be better.  They are so cheap to shoot, you'd shoot it more, and all that can do is make you a better shot with that gun.

Many years ago, before the Valmets, i moved up from the cheaper Savage combo's to there 2400 model (Valmet mfg'd pre 412 models) in 12/.222 Rem..  I swaged my own bullets out of empty 22 caseings and did a lot of small game hunting with that .222...  I harvested a lot of rabbits and ptmargian for my freezer with that combo..  I swaged the bullet "backwards" so they would be solids, and then loaded them to about 1,700 fps...

I still have it, and i've been thinking of getting it out and shooting it again.  The .222 bbl. is really a tack driver, and it would be handy around the shop as at times a shotgun would be usefull to make up for my ageing eyes...  hahahahaa

Anyway, happy shooting and keep us posted!!

dougk, any of the 6.5 calibers make great hunting guns. For varmits I would agree with drillingman a 22 centerfire would be better. IMO  ;D Byron

I went with the .223/12 ga as that will complement the .30-06/12 ga and leave room for a 16x16/.243 drilling if I ever find one...
Thanks for the advice

Drilling
I would rather have found a decent Drilling for a fair price ($6k for a Krieghof is too much for me) in a mainstream modern caliber, but sadly I could not.  I hope this gun is not a bucket of rust... :o
