Smith & Wesson M&P AR
« on: October 23, 2006, 09:12:27 AM »
I am not sure if this is the right place for this, but a few weeks ago I shot the M&P 15 at a gunshop and I really liked it (first time shooting one).  I have looked at the smith line and they have three models.  I shot the 15, but they also have the 15a and the 15T.  I am out of my element with these rifles so take it easy on me ;D  Price is not the biggest factor with me on which one.  I want one that I can have the most fun with and have different options on how I want to shoot on any given day.  The only things I can tell differently from the 15 and the 15a is that the 15 has a flipup rear sight, and that it doesn't have that carry sight.  Also you have that rail that you can put a red dot or scope on.  The 15T is very different.  It has both flip-up sights on the front and back.  A very long rail on top, and the ability to attach easily a flashlight or handle onto it.  The only thing about the 15T I am not crazy about is the front grip (seems uncomfortable to hold) and heavy at the tip (which wouldn't be that bad of a thing with a quick second shot).  What to do???  I want to be sure what one I pick-up it is what I want.  With handguns I know, that is mostly what I shoot, but like I said I am out of my element when it comes to these AR rifles.  I guess while I am rambling on how easy is it to detach or change from a scope to iron sights?  When you put the scope back on it should stay zero right?  It sounds like the same concept with the ruger rings on my ruger bisley hunter.  How far would you try to shoot one of these things?  I was shooting it at 30 yards and had great groupings with it.  So for the long post, but when I plan on spending around $1,000 I want to do my research.  Thanks everyone for your comments! ;D

AR's, hmmmm....

Here are my opinions and suggestions take them for what they are worth.

S&W does not have much history with AR's. I think they are over priced.

If you want to drop serious cash on an AR get a Rock River.
Bushmaster is another good one for dependablity.

You can get "custom" AR's for about the same price. Look around. AR15.com is a good site to check out.

As far as the sights go. They make quick detachable scope mounts for AR's that reattach with little or no readjsutment on zero hold, assuming you are not a competitor and demand ultimate accuracy.

They make AR's in many different calibers. 223/5.56, 243 WSSM, 25 WSSM, 6.5 Grendle, 50 beowolf, 458 socom. etc....

How far can you shoot them?

How far can you shoot a 223 Rem?

many competitors shoot their 223 AR's at 600 yards. Far enough for you?

I have a stock Colt 223, and with practice and the right ammo I could confidenly hit a pie plate at 300 yards with open sights.

AR's are a world unto themselves. You can go as deep as you want.

I have "built" mearly assembled 3 AR's myself. Fun and easy.

If you want high accuracy and are willing to pay, look for an AR from Rock River Arms.

thanks blammer for you thoughts ;D  I was wondering if anyone was going to give me some help.  I know that smith is pretty much making the barrel and few other things for their AR's.  I am leaning towards them because I have never had a problem with their service (they have taken care of me very well), I have shot one of their models, and my gunshop has two in stock (15, 15T).  My friend that works at this shop thinks they are very well priced.  Do you feel the whole line or just a certain model is over priced? My buddy tells me that the 15T is a good deal for what you get with it for a little over $1,200.  He has two bushmasters and one colt, and says that if he just didn't buy a tricked out bushmaster he would have picked up a 15T.  I will check out Rock River.  I want to think about as many models as possible.  My one friend says they are all the same, I am finding out that is not true ::)  Thanks again!
