Ruger date of manufacture error?
« on: August 30, 2006, 11:55:39 PM »
Hey folks,

I picked up a ruger m-77 in 338 win mag. The serial number starts 772-099##   The 772 number say's it's a 1990 but it has a red pad anf tang safety. that should put it much older.  Could this be that far out of order???

thanks

bob

The dating by serial number isn't an exact science with Ruger.  Many times they have models sit or forgotten and not ship until long after they were produced.  Some have sat for years.  Here's also just WAY to many incidents of a particualr specimin having an odd part or two left over from a previous run.   Best bet, call Ruger and ask for the records division.  Request from them a shipping data write up on your gun.  Can't recall if it's a fee service now or not, but even so, it'll possibly prove something unique if there is, about your particular rifle.

Yep, BlkHawk73 is correct. A model 77 in 338 Winchester isn't one that's going to sell in the tens of thousands so it could have easily sat in Ruger's warehouse for several years. Ruger does supply letters if you call with the serial number. The records department can be reached by calling 603-865-2424 and by using the serial number of the gun, they'll type up a letter stating  when the gun was shipped and a description of it..........for free.
