BB size lead shot in 3" 20 gauge?
« on: September 05, 2006, 03:42:19 PM »
I'm just curious if any of you have tried loading BB size shot in magnum 20 gauge loads? If so, what kind of performance did you get(patterns/effective ranges).

I don't handload shotgun shells yet. I'd love to start if I could load them on my Rock Chucker. I heard, or read somewhere that you can get dies for loading shotgun shells on single stage metalic presses, but I've never seen anything like it before.

I'm aggravated that 20 gauge factory loads are so limited when it comes to magnum levels. There are a couple great 3" magnum loads like the Winchester Supreme 3" #4 shot, and Federal 3" #2 shot, but nothing bigger till you get up into #2, or #3 buckshot. Personally, I love the Federal 3" #2's, but they're very hard to find, and I heard Federal was discontinuing them.

I think that 3" magnums with a magnum load of lead #BB shot would be ideal for foxes, bobcats, and coyotes up to 40+ yards. I know ::), most predator hunters use a 12 gauge, but honestly, a 12 gauge is entirely too much for foxes(especially close ranges), and although it'd likely be better for coyotes, and bigger cats, it's not necessary if you keep your ranges within reason.

I can not say anything about the #BB shot  you are asking about, but I can tell you about the "shotgun dies" you mentioned. RCBS made them and they discontinued them about 3 years ago. I have a set of 12 ga that works OK but they are slow and a pain in the butt to set up. They are best for special loads and not volume shooters
