What's better in 308 semi auto
« on: August 25, 2006, 03:10:08 PM »
Here's my question ,  looking to buy a 308 win in semi auto--- M1A , Ptr-91 or the AR-10 style.Out of these three models, pound for pound and dollar for dollar what would say is the best all around mechanically  and  most reliable, well built of the three choices.Have a close relative in special ops and can be supplied with a base rifle( rifle of choice). . Looking for important input. Thanks very much. Support our troops and family members...... Ct Kid

IMHO if it were me I'd go for a M14 or M1 Garand converted to .308. They feel the best to me, and can be extremely accurate if set up properly. That said, for a fighting rifle a FAL is also a good choice, and lots of folks like the AR-10's although I hate the way they feel and shoulder and they can be very picky about ammo.  I guess it comes down to personal preferance.

Try to take the opportunity to put each of what you are interested in up to your shoulder.  See how they feel to you, and how the sights do, or do not line up for you.

Personally, I am a fan of the M1A.

I went through this very same issue last year. I handled an AR10 and an M1A. I chose the M1A Springfield. Accurate, durable, fun to shoot and in my opinion beautiful to look at, great wood. Works great for deer hunting. Put a Springfield scope mount on it and a Leopold scope. I have since handled a M1A SOCOM with the 16 inch barrel. If I had to do over, I would choose the SOCOM. It is lighter and seems so compact and fast handling, more so then the standard M1A.

I really like the socom 1st gen.I have the AR10, meteric fal, inch pattern fal.tanker garand in .308,all of them will be reliable.and they are.I like all of them and they all shoot fine.I take care of them so I have had no breakages.
If you have an AR15 or used the M-16 a lot I would go with the AR10...if not the M1A is a good choice.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.
