Nikon Verses Barska Riflescopes from Sears.
« on: September 06, 2006, 07:12:24 AM »
Looked at the Sears website a minute ago and I see that they have Nikon and Barska Riflescopes for sale. The Nikon is Nitrogen filled. The Barska is not.  What is the importance of Nitrogen in a riflescope and what can you tell me about the Barska riflescopes?

Thanks,

nitrogen prevents fogging in the scope, i've never bothered with a barska, there are a lot of high end scopes out there, and the Nikon is one of them, take a look for yourself.
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell the truth I shoot a Springfield XD so it doesnt really matter.

I can't believe that this is even a question.  Comparing the Nikon to that other scope is like comparing a Toyota 4Runner to a Kia spectra.

The Nikon (especially if its the Monarch line) is worlds better in terms of quality.  Its optics are excellent, and they are very rugged.  I should know, I own about 10 Nikon scopes, and they have held up perfectly and NEVER let me down!

It is the Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 riflescope.  Is it a good scope?

That remark is so off base I don't know what to say? :'(

Comparing the Nikon to that other scope is like comparing aNEW Toyota 4Runner to a12 year old clapped out never been serviced after being rode hard and put up wet Kia spectra.

There, you don't want to be misleading people ;D

My question is why Sears?  The Craftsman name is great and I have bought many tools from them but that is about it.  There customer service is awful in most locations except with the Craftsman handtools.  They will handle tool problems with no questions asked but that is it.  If you have problems with the scope or you are not satisfied, you are SOL.  There is a million other places I would buy a scope. I just can't see spending more money on a riflescope that what a rifle  costs. If I am only going to go  hunting  1 or 2 weeks out of the year, why spend 300 to 400.00 for a riflescope if the rifle costs almost the same?

As for why Sears , The prices are good!!

Because you can't hit it if you can't see it for one thing.  Or are you willing to take a chance on the scope being fogged up when that big buck is in front of you?  Take the time and go compare some of the better scopes to a cheapie and it will become obvious.  Optics are one thing where you usually get what you pay for.

Another thing you never get with El cheap-O scopes is EYE RELIEF. Nothing ruins a hunt faster than having to get stiches in your forehead >:(

If you want a genuinly good scope for not a lot of bling, Go check out midwayusa.com out Look at the Sightron S1 3x9x40  I believe they are current on sale for just over $100. I have one that is currently working wonders on my 300 weatherby mag.

I would go with the Prostaff over the SI, I have both, the Nikon is the better of the two, much clearer. If you step up to the SII, that's a different story. ;)
