Booking another hunt to Canada for next year.
« on: August 28, 2007, 12:57:39 PM »
My buddy wants to go back to where we were at this year in Canada for another black bear hunt. He and I had a great hunt, so I am going to call tonight to book a return trip.
Zaverucha Outfitters in Cochrane, ON Canada.

If you want a big bear go to Manitoba or Sk.
very few good bears come out of Ontario.

I already have a 400 pounder made into a bug, but I appreciate the information.  ;)

Redhawk1 We just got back from a bear hunt south of Cochrane in Gowganda, and also have booked again next year. It kinda gets in your blood huh? this was our first bear hunt all I can say is, what a rush to see one materialize out of the bush without makin a sound. Lookin forward to next year. BTW nice bear, congrats!

I was just hunting in Gowganda last week with the Auld Reekie Lodge.  I am going to try to make it up there again next year, but I have to see how things go.  My wife and I are planning on starting a family and the bear season lands right at a bad time for that.  We saw some pretty good sized bears while we were there and Ontario isn't too bad of a drive for us.

Congratulations on that 400 lb bear. Was it weighed ? I'm glad you are having a good time in Ontario. I hunted around Kenora for 3-4 years without much luck. But, when I switched to Sk and MB things really started happing. Are you hunting anywhere near Kenora ?
Good luck on your next hunt. I won't be going again untill 09, yes it is additive ! I've been at it off and on for 50 yrs.

Yes it was weighed, it was a hell of a time getting it out of the woods, good thing there were 4 of use pulling it out.
I have looked into black bear hunts in SK and MB but they are even further than the 17 hours I had to drive to Ontario.
I also hunt Maine, I had a great time there but I like Ontario better. I don't know where Kenora is, I was at Cochrane, ON Canada.  It is about 260 miles North West of North Bay ON.

A good tip for getting them out of the woods is to make a stretcher.  Like the ones used in the military.  We made one out of heavy 3" straps, with loops to run 8' or so aspen sapplings through it for handles.  Worked great!  Last trip we tied their legs to a pole and carried them out.  That almost killed us.  We had 2 in the 350+ range.  Their body gets swinging back and forth, man what a pain.  They don't drag very well either. Not a all like a deer.

We have used about everything to get them out. A kids tobaggen works great ! I use a five footer. An ice sled also works well.

I have a 2 wheel cart now that I use.  But it is a chore loading a big deer or bear on it by yourself.
