(quicktdoo) question about stainless
« on: September 03, 2006, 06:22:33 AM »
In the "6X47 back in the groove" thread, you mentioned that the barrel lug is softer than the hinge pin which causes wear. Have you mainly seen the handi's shooting loose quickly with the high pressure rds?
Also, in the stainless handi rifles, is the barrel lug stainless? If so will this lessen the problem of "shooting loose"? I have read that the receivers in the stainless handi are the standard receiver that has been nickle plated. If the barrel lug is stainless, is the hinge pin stainless as well?

The only Handis I've known to shoot loose are those that have been reported here, all but one(JPH45's in 1300 rounds) were relatively new rifles and probably were attributed to burrs on the underlug and or sloppy fitting by H&R to begin with. To my recollection they were all fixed by H&R and promptly returned to the owners. I haven't had any of mine loosen up, but I probably haven't shot mine enough for that to happen, either. For the amount of shooting the majority of shooters do with the high pressure calibers, I doubt it very much that it will be a problem, and if it does happen, H&R is there to fix it if need be, they back their product very well, even after the normal warranty period. JPH's shooting habits, shooting every day and putting 8000 rounds thru 4 Handis in 3 yrs is a lot of shooting by anyone's standards!!

FWIW, I have close to 100 rounds thu my .338-06 Ultra, it's still just as tight as it was when factory fitted, it locks up tight on a .001" blade, tight enough that the blade can't be pulled out, which is as tight as any can be IMO. Those rounds are on top of the 200+ rounds that went thru it as a .25-06 before I got it as I bought it used.

My SS '06 Handi has what appears to be a stainless hinge pin, the underlug appears to be stainless as well, the barrel and underlug don't have the appearance of the frame, but since I'm not a metalurgist, I have no idea how much nickel is in the barrel and underlug. Maybe someone can offer an opinion on the wear characteristics of stainless as applicable to your question.

As Fred stated, his shooting loose was due to the epoxy work that he used to reinforce/fit the underlug to the barrel. Matt Parliament used epoxy to fit a barrel, maybe he'll check in about how that's holding up. I've only done one .270 barrel and didn't shoot it much to really test it, but it did shoot fine with factory ammo.

ok.
I see now that it is more of a problem with burrs in manufacter and  assembly as in sloppy fitting. In the back of my mind, I guess I was confusing this with frame stretch. The burrs would really explain how one would get loose in 60 rds as posted by another member. More than likely, once corrected, there should not be a problem for a long time.
By the way, How do you like the SS handi? Is there any noticable difference in fit and function over the std blue?

One issue I had with it is they don't use bright hardware on all parts, the hammer, barrel release, spacer, trigger and guard, are all blued, so it's not so bad with a black synthetic stock, but it is a mix I didn't care for, so I polished a steel spacer and trigger guard, then polished the other parts so it at least it's all stainless looking. Fit and function are great, no different that any other Handi.

That is a sharp looking handi!  I am getting ready to make my first handi purchase and am going to buy the ultra slug delux and I am going to get a 45-70 with a .25-06 barrel also and wanted the same stock as the ultra slug, like the one you have on this rifle.  Can the rifles be special orderd with this stock? The catalog only shows the laminate in cinnaman color and I prefer the greener version.

Thanks!! ;) You can order the camo laminated stock set from H&R or Brownell's, there are parts numbers and 2005 prices in the FAQ under 2005 Retail Parts and Price list. They have come on limited/special edition models in the past, but can't be ordered that way with the exception of the USH.
