Any one know where I can find some? Been looking all over and every bodys out of stock. Need about 10 boxes for an upcoming prairie dog trip. Thanks, KN

This 17 ammo shortage is a little like the 5mm mag. only in reverse with it they just let the ammo dry up on the shelfs and before you knew it the cost for a box of ammo was close to $50.00 at the gunshows if you could get the dealer to let it go, most only wanted to show you they had a box full.

When the stuff first showed up I was finding it every where for $10 a box. Figured the price was going to come down so I only bought a couple of boxes. Now its all dried up and if your lucky enough to find it at a gun show they want $12-13 a box. I passed up some last weekend at the gun show for $12 because I didn't realize how scarce it had become. Now I'm screwed. Called every gun shop in town and the only ammo available is with a gun purchase,(one box at that). I have a little over a month to come up with some. Called Midway and they told me they could put me on there back order list, but theres already 1500 people on it. Cabellas told me the end of May, Maybe!! Natchez didn't have any, Cheaper than dirt, etc. KN

KN: A friend of mine manages the wal-mart sporting goods dept. here and he has been trying for months to get some in and cant keep getting the same old story, he said that he was told that they are waiting for Rem. to come out with their brand b-4 they get any in, all I know is that 22 mag. sure looks good in the safe with plenty of ammo avail. hope you find some soon and at a reasonable price.

How very strange. Do you you think this is because demand for the guns is too great to keep up with the manufacturing capacity for the ammunition?

Questor: I dont really think so, of all the people that I know who own guns/ shoot/ hunt/ trade guns/ etc. I only know of ONE individual who actually owns a 17. I have talked to several who have expressed some interest in them when they first come out but that has been declining as ammo has been a problem to locate, and when it has been found a premium price was being required to get it, how many people do you know that showed interest in them when they first came out have actually went out and got one?

That's interesting, jhm. I saw spent casings for them for a while last year at my range, but not anymore. I never could figure out why anyone wanted them because they damage too much meat in squirrels and other small game at close range, and they're too sensitive to wind at longer ranges. That makes it useless to me. It's a rare day on the prairie dog towns that don't have significant wind.

I agree last year it was all you heard but like I said in earlier post I only know of one individual at this time that actually has one and I think he only bought it just to have it I know he does more collecting than actual hunting, he may do a little casual shooting with it kinda like I would if I run across one at a bargain, but I am not going to try to be the first on the block to own one. But a nice blue and wood 77-17 would go nice with the 77-22 and the 77-22mag in the safe now that I think about it, oh Ill just wait and make sure ammo is going to be avail. for the darn things.

Remington is showing it on their web site now but I haven't seen any yet. Also read that CCI was going to sell it. From what I understand CCI makes it for Hornady any way. KN

Yaull might try around the rural areas that dont like the 17.
Nobody is buying them around here...all we got is squirrels and deer.
Not a whole lot of use for a .17.

Even those with who are FFL dealers who have priority by Hornady over the chain stores are having a hard time getting ammo.

Sounds like the gun manufacturers are creating more and more of a need
for ammo much faster than the ammo manufacturers can keep up with it.
One of the guys over at rimfirecentral who knows a "Wheel" at CCI says
he was told that CCI and Hornady together have a back-order of no less
than 65 MILLION rounds! Complicating matters is that too many of us are
seeing the shortage, and attempting to buy ammo by the brick to bring our
personal supply up. At present rates of more 17 caliber guns being bought
and more ammo being ordered, that back-order could get a LOT worse
before getting better. And the prices will remain high until a few months
after there are no longer back orders.

Guess it depends on the area as to whether the rifles are selling or not.
There are several I know who have gotten the .17's. Personally, I did get
mine for squirrels and rabbits -- this little Marlin 17VS is accurate enough
for head shots at 100 yards, but like anything else, it'll take PRACTICE,
and the availability of ammo is NOT helping the situation!!!

I did finally find some in a little out of the way gun shop not too far from home. Paid out the nose for it but I have enough to get me through a week end of prarie dog shootin. Not using it as a primary caliber, just wanted to shoot some to see how far I could accurately hit them from. I'm guessing 175-200yd max with a 14" pistol. Judging by the amount of spent brass underfoot at local ranges, it seems as if it's the only caliber on Earth! It occurred to me the other day while standing ankle-deep in this stuff that I maybe oughtta vacuum it all up and take it to the scrapyard.

I'm going to Mao-Mart in a few minutes on an errand; I'll see if they have any.

Wellllll.... the sad news is that both the local Wally-Worlds (including a Super Wally-World Indoor Theme Park!) are out. I think. Can't be sure since the dullard behind one of the ammo counters acquired that deer-in-the-headlights, open-mouth stare when I asked. :shock:

Yea Most of those dummys at Wally World Kmart, Dunham Sports ect have no idea what they are selling they are there for the wages and have never even shot a gun expecially some of the dumb females you get waiting on you. And I am not knocking the females fellas as they may be the future of our sport, but and a lot of them have no idea how a gun even functions, let alone what ammo goes with what.

. I know what I am looking for and fairly expirienced but the newby is in troubleshopping at these places. Jim

I was in a local wal-mart just before deer season earlier this year and a lady walks up to the counter and tells the sales lady that her son had sent her to get a box of 222 ammo. Sales lady then looks and says We don't have any 222 ammo, will 223 be close enough. Lady says I don't see why not. After recovering from shock I did the ladys son a favor and stoped the sale, tried to explain why it wouldn't work. Lady just leaves disgusted and confused. Then the sales lady tries to give me 22mag ammo when I asked for some CCI mini-mags. Boggles the mind. KN

Hey, My local gun shop called me today and said he got 2 boxes of ammo in. 1 box of the new CCI and 1 box of the new Remington. Picked them both up to try. The Remington uses a 17gr V-MAX, looks like the Hornady but with a gold tip instead of red. The CCI uses a 17gr Speer TNT hollow point. Both look like winners. KN

i was going to report about the cci ammo on the shelf today but you beat me to it. they are charging $11 a box here. i didnt see any remington ammo. what did you have to pay for yours? ( i dont own a 17 yet, waiting to see how things go with it)

I paid $11.45 for the CCIs and $9.45 for the remingtons. I actually have a source for the Hornadys at $8.45 but they cant get it any faster than any one else. KN

i am glad to see different manufacturers offering ammo, maybe it will bring the price within reason. i still plan on waiting to get mine, though.

I couldn't wait any more. I got one and so far have plenty of ammo in the local shop. Hope it stays that way for a while.
