S&W Model 41 Carbine Conversion
« on: June 28, 2006, 10:22:00 AM »
In the late '70s one of the gun mags had an article on a carbine conversion for the Model 41. I was attending the Colorado School of Trades in '80 and '81 and one of the other students was doing the conversion. Can anyone remember what magazine and issue the article appeared in? I'm thinking "Guns" or "Gunworld".

I don't recall the magazine but I believe the work was done by Spokhandguns in Spokane, Washington.

I saw one a couple of years later, also one done on a High Standard gun.

Strawhat,
Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to think no one remembered the conversion. Still hoping someone can remember where the article appeared. Bob Loveless did a conversion also that turned the Model 41 into an exposed hammer field gun. Can't remember where the article for that one appeared either.
I have done the High standard conversion on a Victor. Modified the stock assembly as the original flexed too much.  Shoots well and it's pretty easy to add extra pistol barrels, of course without the stock.

Another thought came to me as I was driving from one job site to the other.  I was thinking about the article when the name  Dean Grennel jumped into my thoughts.  Don't recall if he wrote that article or maybe some other article in the same mag but it might help so I figured it wouldn't hurt to tell you.

I have given some thought to something similar with a High Standard.  As I recall the one I saw looked like something Napolean Solo would have carried.

Grennel sounds consistent with the magazines I thought the article appeared in. The High Standard article was by Pete Dickey and appeared in the May 1979 issue of "American Rifleman".

The article on Mike Loveess and his hammer conversion of the S&W 41 appeared in an issue of Gun World, if I remember correctly.

And yes, Dean Grennell wrote for Gun World magazine.
