NEF 45/70 pressures
« on: September 02, 2006, 09:48:19 AM »
Can the NEF BC 45/70 be loaded to the high modern pressures like in the marlin 1895 and Ruger 1?

There is an engraved commemorative BC for sale at a shop near me between 500-600.00
I am considering it.

Many will say yes, and I would have to agree...BUT I find loading them to an intermeadate velocity level works best for me.

In my case, I have the Marlin, Ruger#1 and a Browning 1895 to send those heavy weight projectiles at high end velocities.

The Handi is a leight weight "handi" rifle. While I am not recoil shy, its gets ornery at top velocities.

 I like 15-1600 W a 400gr procectile.

You can if you want, but as CW stated, the recoil is brutal even at levergun levels which is 40kpsi in Hodgdon data, Ruger is 50kpsi. Read some of NFG's posts on his hot loads, 300gr bullets at 2600+fps and 400gr at well over 2000fps. I've shot 300gr Nosler PP at well over 2400fps and even with laminated stock, limbsaver, Past magnum shoulder pad and 2lbs of lead in the butt, it's real hard on the body. The rifle will take it, but will you!! The BC with it's steel but plate makes shooting heavy loads even tougher.

The Golden BC sells for closer to $400 at Davidson's.....if they had any!!
