Handgun noise

Curious if you've got any expeirience with this one. What would you say is quieter out of a 12" closed breech pistol?
.41 mag with 250's @ 1300fps
.44 mag with 280's @1200fps
.480 ruger with 400's @ 900fps 
Seems the .480 would be the quietest because of the light load, but the larger volume of the barrel I think would make it just as loud as the rest.
Would like to keep it quiet in my smaller hunting areas.

swampthing, IMO sup-sonic will be the quietest. However they will all be loud. Regards, Byron  ;D

Agreed that they will all be loud.

The report does seem to be more subdued as you get closer to the ground.
The coyote hunting done by myself is mainly from prone or sitting position. Seems like the brush between me & the target tends to absorb the sound as I get more of a pop than the boom I get at the target range.
You could be in the same ballpark if Deer hunting from a ground blind.

Testing would be needed to prove this to be true. With your friend backed off 2 or 3 hundred yards you could let one go from the tree stand, and then one from sitting such as in a ground blind and see if he can tell any difference.

Lloyd is correct.  Any subsonic load will be quieter than one that breaks the speed of sound.  Mikey.

Ok I was intrested so I tested of a panel of 4 testers 4 out of 4 said the 480 load was quieter.

However we shot up all the 41 and 44 shells too.

And I got too shoot a 41 mag. Never shot one before . Thanks for the excuse to do so.

The speed on that .480 seems mighty slow.  I shoot 410 grain out of mine at 1200fps.  As for the sound, I've shot all three and they are all very loud.

I'd vote for the 480, but it will be a matter of slight degree. You won't get the crack with the subsonic round. I've listened to gun shots from the range I belong to and there isn't much difference between handgun report and rifle report when you're more than a few hundred yards away.

Most of my areas are "shotgun" zones, certain caliber hanguns-muzzleloaders-archery are allowed as well.
I shoot saboted hardcast out of my muzzleloader with about 45g of 777 ffg for 1200 fps, the 28" barrel really gets the sound level down. I'll think I'll try to get that sub sonic and take a listen.
Too bad .50 cal handguns aren't on the list as a 440g that falls out of the barrel @ 800 fps should be almost silent from about a 100 yds away in the woods.

In my woods, any gun shot 100 yards away is loud, even in the early season when there are still leaves on the trees.
