Shortening a stock for a Junior shooter

A buddy of mine wants me to shorten the stock on a .410 for his boy.  Personally I don't think a .410 is the gun for a kid but it is his kid.  Anyway he wants me to shorten it and put dowels in the cutoff piece so it can be reattached in the future to fit him when he grows up.  I have a plan figured out to do this and to add a spacer to take up the width of the saw cut.  What I need is a way to figure how much to cut off the stock without having the kid come to my house.  Is there some sort of measurement that can be taken to figure out the length of pull he would need?

Is he that bad of a kid??  My first choice for kids would be a single shot 28 gauge, especially for wingshooting.  I would think the most accurate measurement is going to come from the individual whom the gun is being fitted for!

I agree with twin9553 a .28 ga in H&R/NEF in a younth model maybe a better choice.  I had both of my kids shoot then hunt with my NEF .28 ga with a youth stock installed on it.  Worked out great both are still active hunters.  If you limt a kid to a load holding only 1/2 oz of lead he is going to get tired of missing and give up.
