DW vs FA accuracy
« on: August 31, 2006, 10:42:55 AM »
Which is more accurate in a 44 mag,   DW or FA,  Assuming both have the same length barrel and are unmodified from the factory.

If you pick one as more accurate, let me know what group size you think each one will do at 100 yards.

tks

Can't speak for the Freedom Arms, but I get 2 1/2" groups with my .41 mag Dan Wesson.  It was manufactured in Monson.  If I do my part, my Norwich 722 will run with the Freedom .22,  won't run away from them though.

I can not stand the way the single action "Hogleg" grips feel.   Double action grips are much more comfortable for me.

I have a Freedom 83 silhouette model in 41 mag. It will shoot 1.5"average, 5 shot groups  at 100 yards. I have fired many of them and it is consistent. That is from bags using a 7x pistol scope.
I have a Dan Wesson 44 mag 10" that I hope to begin testing this weekend. Once again it will be with a 7x pistol scope over bags at 100 yards. I will post the results as soon as I have them.

PS. my Freedom 83 silhouette 22lr shoots 1 1/8" average, 5 shot groups at 100 yards with Eley Match EPS (Black Box) I was using a Leupold 6-18x scope set on 18x over bags.
Big grin. ;D

Hope to post results by Tuesday.

I shot several groups with several different loads through the DW this past weekend.
With the better loads the groups ranged from 2 to 4 inches with most running on the 3-4 inch side. There were some shining moments where three (4 on one occasion) went into about 1 - 1 1/4 inches and then kicked the remaining shots out to at least two inches. It seems to show promise but it feels to me like something could certainly be tighter with the cylinder.
I will try another couple of loads and see what happens then I will test for individual chamber groups. Then I may ship it off to a DW smith and see if he can tighten it up.
Shoot well and shoot often.

More DW groups this weekend, First group showed a 2" (5 shot) group then everything went goofy up to 4-5" groups/patterns at 100 yards.
I'm starting to wonder if I may not have a great one. It's not bad but it's not my Freedom by a long ways. But then again my Freedom was not nearly as impressive until I found the right powder.
I'll keep reporting results as they come in.

perhaps the DW needs to have the barrel fire lapped?
I have not done this but hear it can turn an ordinary barrel into state of the art performance. Plus you can do it yourself!
