« on: July 16, 2006, 05:15:35 PM »
Ok, before bear hunting, I have a decision to make...

Browning A-Bolt 30-06
..or..
Kimber 84M Montana 7mm-08

What do you guys think?

well you could get a 160 grain bullet for the 7mm or a 180 or 200 for the 30-06, personally i'd go with the 30-06, my dad has the 7mm08 and its a great round, i own the 30-06 which i love as well plus it has a little more power and you can add a little more weight, with some strong bullets it should be fine. some may recommend a bigger gun for bigger black bear though i'm assuming you are hunting black bear if not i'd get a bigger gun.
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell the truth I shoot a Springfield XD so it doesnt really matter.

Either one will work, or which ever one you shoot better.

I'd go with the Kimber in 7mm-08 and load with it 120 grain TSX bullets. I'm assuming you're hunting black bear, correct?

Both have the power for close work, thick areas, bait hunting.  If you're shooting open areas, beaches, tundra, western slopes, IMO the 06 would be a much better choice.

Hi agree with tundragriz, based on the environment I'd opt for the BAB-06 is a great choice for open areas.

Heavier bullet equals better PENETRATION.  The '06 wins hands down.

I have (Had) both calibers. I traded the 7/08 (6lbs scope and all) for a .22 hornet(Ruger with the heavey target bbl and brown lam stock). That guys 15 year old daughter killed a nice 4 x 4 first day out with that little gun. Then I went to the gun shop and picked up a box of 50 ,22 Hornets. They almost had to carry me out on a stretcher when they told me how much those little suckers are.The 7/08 was about six lbs scope and all, custom built. Loved it and it was what I carried if I was going to be moving a lot and covering ground. The 30/.06 may be the best, all around choice, but, what the heck, I would get the 7/08 because I ....already have an 06. PS. I was forced into buying the dies 6 boxes of different bullets, powder and brass for that little 22 Hornet. Just to keep from paying them $30.00 for 50 rnds loaded.

The 7mm-08 will certainly kill one but IMHO the larger caliber/diameter would be the better choice.  Rev
