45-70 handi rifles??????????
« on: September 09, 2006, 07:13:48 AM »
I am new to the handi rifle scene(I am going to buy a 45-70) and have some questions:

It seems that the H&R and N.E.F. rifle are almost identical. Is one in 45-70 better than the other? (I don't want a buffalo rifle)

What type of trigger pull do these rifles come with? Is one brand better than the other?

Does one brand offer more accessories or have better customer service than the other?

Is one brand more inherently accurate then the other?

Thanks alot!

Chris

They're one in the same, only one shop they come from in Gardner MA, owned by Marlin, H&R's typically have nicer laminated and checkered stocks, limited edition NEF laminated stocks aren't checkered usually. Other than that, not much difference, although older Ultras have nicer finsihed barrels, I just bought an older .25-06 Ultra that they no longer offer, it's got one of the nicest finished barrels I've seen, it may soon become a .375-06!!

Triggers of late have been 3-3½lbs out of the box, but if they aren't, trigger jobs are not that hard to do, or H&R will do a free trigger job when you send a frame in for an accessory barrel.

See the FAQ and Help sticky, lots of info there to answer your questions.

I just bought an NEF in .45-70.  My trigger is as good as you could ask for.  It's light with zero creep.  I don't like the raised cheek piece stocks, but I do like wood.  I may order me a curly maple stock without the pistol grip when I get some more money.

I've fallen into the Handy trap also .I already have a 223 ultra  that is extremely accurate,  I  have a new 45-70 on order that will be in this week  and    I am already setting money aside for either a 7mm-08  or a 30-30 .   So  be prepaired , 1 is never enough.

A local shop has a used Handi in .270 with scope for $200.00.  I could dump the barrel on eBay and have a .30-30 barrel installed for cheap.  I need to stay out of these places!!!!! ;D
