Value of early Govt Model target gun
« on: September 07, 2006, 12:26:36 PM »
I have an old pre-series 70 Colt Government Model and I need help figuring out what it is worth. It's serial number is 286***-C. It was sent to a gunsmith a long time ago named Austin Behlert in NJ, I think. It has a 38-45 Clerk conversion and target sights added. When I bought it I got the original parts, barrel, bushing, rear sight and grips. It has a small hole, 1/8, drilled in the bottom of the trigger guard, otherwise it is nice and clean and in maybe 96% condition. My question is, what is it worth? I collect S&W revolvers and have some Colts as well. I know that if this one had been left alone it would be worth more. I wonder if it has value as is, or if I should attempt to return it to it's original condition. I think that would only involve staking in a front sight. My son is looking for a shooter and I was thinking of giving it to him, but might be better to sell it and buy a newer one for him to carry. Does anyone know what the hole in the trigger guard is for? It is directly under the front edge of the trigger. Thanks for the help, Shotgunner
