Powder idea for 500 magnum (Rifle)
« on: October 18, 2006, 02:31:42 PM »
I am looking for opinions on some thoughts I've had.

How possible would it be to use powders suitable for the 45-70 in the 500 magnum Handi?  I am thinking specifically about RL-7, IMR/H-4198, IMR 3031, or H-322.  It seems to me that the slower burning rifle powders ought to ignite fine since it already uses large rifle primers.  Also, the pressures ought to be lower, even will filled near %100 density then loads with H-110/W-296/Lil-Gun.  I am not looking to increase velocity (I personally can't take more recoil), in fact I am actually looking for a good midrange load without having to resort to low density loadings of fast burning pistol powders.  Think of it as a Marlin/Ruger loading of the old 50-70.  These loads would not likely be suitable for a handgun, but ought to work in the rifle barrel of the Handi.

Trail Boss would be my choice.
