Finaly got to shoot my 93RFSS
« on: December 29, 2006, 07:28:26 PM »
A couple of months ago I picked up a savage 93RFSS 17HMR. I liked the balance that the sporter barrel
gives the gun vs the heavy varmint barrel. I stopped by Cabela's and picked up a few different kinds of ammo.
CCI 17gr TNT hp, Federal Premium 17gr V-Shock TNT hp, Hornady 17gr Varmit Express V Max, and Hornady
20gr XTP. I have a Barska 4-12X50mm scope on it. I wasn't going to get too serious as I don't have a rest
or a good shooting table yet. So that coupled with the fact of the gun being brand new I was mostly looking to do some plinking and have some fun. I sighted it in at 100 yards then my Dad and I started popping soda
cans filled with water from 50-125 yards. What a great time that was that was! Those cans would just explode when they were hit! From what I could tell the Hornady 17gr Varmint Express and the CCI 17gr TNT
were the most consistent. This is my first Savage and my first 17hmr and it definitely won't be my last!
We ended up firing about 125 rounds. I'm going to get a good shooting rest and a table soon. Then I will be able to find out what this fun rifle is capable of. That 17hmr is one of my favorite calibers now! The
rifle worked perfectly. Savage makes a great product!

I have a Savage 17 HMR also and it likes the Hornady ammo the best.  We like to shoot shotgun hulls at 100 yards.   :)

I love my Savage 93 and you will find that each gun will like certain brands of ammo. My loves the CCI in 20 grain that seems to shoot the tightest groups then the Hornady. Good luck  ;D
