The one I had shot the old Winchester 40 grain HPs into less than an inch at 100 yards consistently. I let it go thinking I wanted to try a .17 HMR. After going thru several of them with none of them working well I bought a newer 982SS to replace my old one. So far I've not even scoped it so have no clue how it's gonna shoot or what ammo it's going to prefer. The new one does have a bit better trigger than the old one but then the old one wasn't bad so I had no real complaints. In general the Marlin guns are very accurate, you just need to try seveal different loads to see what it likes. Let the gun decide what it wants to shoot, don't try to decide for it.

Just curious, which 17 HMR's did you try?  I don't have any experience with the H&R(NEF)line of HMR's but do with the Marlin and Savage and have never heard anyone talk bad about them.  I owned them both and both shot very well.  I still have a NEF 22 mag Ultra and Savage 22 mag but neither are as accurate as my Savage 17 HMR.

Ruger, Marlin, and Savage in that order. None were acceptable to me. I now have a CZ. Like the replacement Marlin .22 Mag I've not yet even scoped it much less shot it. But I have finally bought the scope for it so when warm weather returns again I'll have to get around to it.

I'm sure you won't regret the CZ.  I shoot my Savage 17 HMR and my son-in-law shoots a Marlin 17 HMR.  We like to shoot empty shotgun hulls at 100 yards.  Targets any bigger and it just isn't as much fun and are just too easy to hit.   :)
