300 Remington SSUM
« on: September 04, 2006, 07:45:53 PM »

I am having a 13'' pistol barrel built for my Encore in 300 Remington SSUM.  Anyone with any input on handloads for this caliber in short barrel. It will be used just for deer hunting mostly in fairly heavy cover. I realize it is WAY too much for deer as the 45-70 I used before it, but that is part of the fun of reloading right. Any info or experience appreciated.

H4895 will give good accuracy with reduced pressures and reduced loads to about 60%. If you are going to be close you don't need all the velocity of the slower magnum charges. It seems a waste to have a new, high tech, magnum just to download it to 308 starting loads to shoot deer at 50 to 75 yards. That's what makes horse racing and shooting fun... All the different choices.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.
